Setup wasn't as easy as I thought it would be, but I love this printer
By Deborah on Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2017
Well, I really do like this printer - it does what it's supposed to do, but setup took me almost 2 hours. The instruction booklet looked relatively easy (too easy) but I had trouble connecting it to my computer. I don't have WiFi, so I had to connect via USB cable, which does not come with the printer. Fortunately, I had one from another printer that someone gave me but I never used. Even though the printer was connected to my MAC, it kept telling me it wasn't. I was going to back out and start over, but the online instructions warned me not to. There were several pages of instructions that didn't apply to me since I wasn't trying to connect wireless, and finally I got to a page that told me I had to download some stuff, which I did, I followed the steps, and then it worked. The other problem I had was loading paper. It didn't really tell me where to load paper and I was loading it in the output tray instead of taking that tray out and loading the paper that way. I saw where you loaded picture size paper, and didn't realize all I had to do was expand the smaller paper tray to load letter size paper. Once I figured that out,I was ok. I scanned a color picture as a test into my computer, and I was impressed with how it looked on my MAC. I like the idea of scanning to email, because that really takes the place of faxing a document - an unnecessary feature if you can scan to email. There's all kind of HP support available, but I finally figured it out on my own. This is my first printer - at least that I actually hooked up and used. They really push for the automatic shipping of ink, but based on what I've read here, I passed that up. I won't have the volume to support that. If I print 10 pages a month, that will be a lot. I really bought this to scan pictures into my MAC so I can play around with them with PhotoShop. However, now that I have it, I'm sure I'll be using it more than I thought I would. It's a little noisy, but I'm really a very low-volume user, so that's not an issue for me. It's bigger than I thought, so I had to do some re-arranging on my desk, and right now, I have a lot of stuff on the floor. One of my computer speakers is sitting on top of the printer because there's no place else for it to go. But I can live with that. I'll update in a few weeks once I've had more experience with it and I've used it more, but I think I'm going to be really happy with this printer. Ok, I've had this printer almost a month now, and I'm over the setup issues. It's working just fine. Whatever 'kinks' it had, seemed to have worked themselves out. Apple very nicely sent me an update for this printer, and I have no complaints at all. You really don't need a fax machine. The scanner scans to email, and I've saved myself time, energy, stamps and fax rates by scanning to email and sending correspondence that way. Since I'm out of work on short-term disability right now, this has been an immense help to me. It's saved me a lot of stress and headaches, and I can take care of business quickly and then forget about it. I highly recommend this printer - I changed my 4-star rating to 5 stars. If there were more stars to give, I would in a heartbeat. Yes, it took me a while to set it up, but I'm not computer savvy, and once I got passed that, it's been working fine. I love the quality of photos once they've been scanned into my MAC, I have absolutely no hesitation recommending this printer to anyone else.

Seductively Good Printing Quality for a Few Pages; Demonic, Junk Cartridges
By Johann Cat on Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2018
This printer puts you in an abusive relationship, because it tempts you into thinking that if you "treat it right" it will reward you by "acting sane for a few days." This may be a glowing possibility, yet it is always, alas, a dark lie. The print quality itself is the come-on: it is very good, for a few pages. But the cartridges for these printers are utter junk. The cartridges for this machine are designed to fail, I think, after testing more than one set. I predict--but do know know for sure--that they were designed this way to dissuade people from refilling them. But even at their "best," the cartridges (even the "XL" size) are tiny, run out in a maddeningly short space of time, and are prone to lapses in ink flow that are apparently caused by the cartridges' diabolical sensitivity to air bubbles in their chambers. I briefly thought a priming pump might solve these issues, but no. Throwing this into a black hole and getting a model of printer that has refill tanks is my plan. DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE IF YOU HAVE THE REMOTEST DREAM OF REFILLING ITS CARTRIDGES. Yet, and please beware--and cross the street when you see this thing tempt you, that-- even new, the cartridges may fail. The tri-color single cartridge is especially maddening, as often one color will abruptly stop flowing. This printer is one of the rogues' gallery of technical criminals of our era priced cheap but designed to fail to provoke you to buy other other junk (cartridges) associated with it. Avoid this. On principle, I would say avoid all HP products.
