Excellent for over pronating; stick with your normal width
By positiveattitude on Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2015
I purchased these shoes for my son who wears size 15 wide, has flat feet, and is a severe over pronator. These shoes are perfect! The support is amazing and the shoe is very comfortable! Wonderful shoes to avoid pressure on bunions, or post bunion surgery! The main reason for this review is to emphasize DO NOT ORDER UP FROM YOUR NORMAL WIDTH like 4 reviewers said to do. I followed the 4 reviewers statements to go up in width, and the toe box turned out to be roomier than necessary. I should have paid attention to the majority who did not complain about the width. "Wide" turned out to be just fine for what we expected wide to be. Great shoes! Non-marring. Color goes great with all outfits. ASICS also offers the Gel Fortify 8 for moderate pronators that comes in red side pattern, if your pronating isn't quite as severe.

Supportive, but very funny-fitting
By C. St Pierre on Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2015
Background: I'm 5'9", 180 lbs. I run about 25 miles per week, building towards 35. My 10k pace is 7:45; my half-marathon pace is 8:15. I'm training for my first marathon currently. I have very wide feet, normal arches, and severe overpronation; as a result, I've dealt with shin splints and tendonitis of basically every tendon in my hip and knee. I've owned three pairs of Asics over the past six months: GT-2000 2s in size 9 (retired after over 500 miles); GEL-Kayano 20s in 9-4E (over 150 miles); and these.in 9-2E (25 miles thus far). Overall, these show promise. I'm glad Asics has a new super-supportive model -- I miss my ancient GEL-Foundations -- and you only need to try these on to feel the increase in support over the Kayanos, which are already quite supportive. My shins feel much better after 7 miles in these than after the same distance in my Kayanos. Unfortunately, there are some strange (and significant) issues with the fit. My Kayanos were a bit too wide at 4E, so I went with 2E on these. If anything the toe box is too narrow, though -- definitely narrower than my GT-2000s, which are D ("normal" width). The heel box, on the other hand, is extremely wide and leads to a lot of heel slosh. I definitely got some blisters during the break-in period, and I have a lot of difficulty getting these tight enough, which is not a problem I've had with any of my other Asics. Perhaps some orthotics would help fill out the heel box; I feel like that'd be necessary for anyone with really wide feet, since I can't imagine how spacious the heel on a pair of 4Es would be. My other Asics haven't required any sort of break-in period, which is why I'm comfortable buying them online -- they usually fit me *great.* So this is definitely anomalous. Secondly, as you might expect, all that support comes at a price: these are *heavy*. There's a ton of plastic on the arch and heel to give all that support, and weight comes with it. Beyond the break-in period, I don't plan to wear these for short runs or races -- they're just too heavy. My Kayanos don't give me as much support, so these will definitely be my go-to for any training run longer than about 4 miles. I'm looking forward to the GEL-Fortify 2. Hopefully Asics can fix some of the issues with the last, which are really my only major complaints with this shoe. With my current training plan, both my Fortifys and my Kayanos will wear out in May or June, and I'm honestly not sure what I'll buy to get me through until next year's shoes are released; the Kayanos aren't supportive enough for long distances, but these fit too poorly to be every day shoes.
