Adeptus 6 Drawer Rolling Carts - 2 Styles

I've put together many pieces of pre-fab, DIY furniture in my life--including large, multi-drawer & cabinet storage pieces--so I had no hesitation about purchasing this item, with the intent of using it for jewelry storage. This small cart should have taken a few hours to put together at the most--working at a leisurely pace. Instead--three DAYS later--I've just dumped the entirety of the mangled shell, and drawers into a large plastic garbage bag where I anticipate it will be mercifully taken out of my sight by my local trash company... ...unless even THEY refuse to have anything to do with it. As other reviewers have noted, the construction design of this piece is not at all bad. If they had just spent a few more dollars on development and research to make sure the construction components actually WORK, this could have been a top-notch little product, instead of landfill or bonfire fodder. My problems began with the plastic drawer slides that were to be installed on the sides of the cabinet. The instructions state to gently tap them in with a rubber hammer. Ha! A blow from John Henry's hammer couldn't tap these in place so that they're flush with the cabinet side: the pre-drilled holes are too small to accommodate the hard plastic posts of the glides. I tried to work around this by heating an Xacto knife and then shaving off bits of the plastic posts--a couple hours of work right there--but still managed to chip off parts of a couple of the glides while getting them into place. I figured I could work around that--the glides weren't so badly chipped as to cause major function problems--but then found myself facing the problem of not being able to get the sides and top flush while putting the main body together. When one of the wood dowels ripped a chunk out of the top, it became evident that the problem was--again--a size mismatch among components. No probs--shaving down the dowels and copious use of wood glue should suffice--right? While waiting for that mess to set for a day or so, I began work on the drawers. Here I discovered that almost no guide hole are drilled in the drawer components, and the very back part of the drawer bottom is held in place by small nails, rather than having a groove that it sits in on the back piece. I finished a couple drawers and then waited a day to see how they actually worked in the cabinet. I chose a section where the drawer glides had actually installed without problems, slid the drawer in--and it stuck halfway in. I tried to pull it out--nothing doing. I gave it a firm yank--which also caused a side piece to begin separating from one of the bottom struts--and examined the drawer and glides. As near as I could determine, the wood grooves in the drawer sides are just a fraction too narrow or shallow, at points, to slide along the glides. I briefly considered whipping out my trusty Xacto knife once more...but then began mulling over the fact that I had already put far too many hours of work into this piece of furniture that would never be very sturdy or functional, due to its many construction problems. I reached for a trash bag instead. I consider it to be a $50 lesson learned--and thanked the heavens that I decided against the larger, more expensive Adeptus cart I had been looking at.
