Gorgeous display + accuracy
By Marty B on Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2014
I purchased an Oregon Scientific weather station about 18 years ago and it still faithfully reports my inside and outside temperatures with two sensors I have in my yard. However, the clock and date functions no longer work and I wanted to replace the base station with another O.S. unit. Unfortunately, Oregon Scientific new models no longer support the outside sensors I have, so I decided to switch brands and try this AcuRite model. Setup I received my unit promptly from Amazon (Thanks, Prime!) and set the station up in less than five minutes. (Be sure to have five AA batteries on hand - you'll need two for the outside sensor and three for backing up the base station's settings.) The display is drop dead gorgeous... plenty of light makes the screen quite readable across the room and the colors are pleasing. Other reviewers mentioned that the display is dim and hard to read - but if you have it plugged into an AC socket and have the display set at 100%, it is hard to understand the complaint. The only question I had in setting the station up was which geographic region in the US I should choose... the map in the instructions was not very clear as I live near the line between region "E" and "A". AcuRite's website has a slightly better map which helped me. For you button pushers out there, there are a few opportunities to alter your graphic display, but not a lot. You can change what is displayed in the top center portion of the display between historical representations of outdoor changes in temperature, humidity and barometric pressure. You can also change the display back-lighting between three levels of brightness or select an auto dim setting which lowers the brightness at night. Accuracy Having my still functioning Oregon Scientific model helped me reach the conclusion that this AcuRite is dead on for temperature readings. The barometric and humidity readings are quite close to my local weather readings as displayed on TWC. My weather pattern doesn't change very much here in the Bay Area summer pattern, but after a couple of days, the AcuRite does seem to accurately predict the cloud cover changes throughout the day. As we get more into the rainy season (I hope!) it will be interesting to see how my AcuRite handles those predictions. Value At around $50, this is everything that my old Oregon Scientific station was and more. It appears accurate and definitely has a great display. The ONLY things I would like are: - the ability to see the highest temperature reading of the day. AcuRite implies that this is displayed, but it isn't. - the ability to use more than one sensor in different parts of the yard or house. My O.S. supported up to three different sensors. Technically, it would appear that the AcuRite could support three, but you would have to take the battery cover off the back of the unit and slide a switch to a different sensor. Who's going to do that? This should be a push button choice on the front of the unit!

It does have a strong signal, but display is difficult to read.

I have several weather center throughout my house from different manufactures including AcuRite, La Crosse, Oregon Scientific and Ambient Weather. My goal was to tell the temperature inside my barn from inside my house, so I needed one that went long range as well as through walls. My barn is an unobstructed 310 feet from the room where this weather station would sit. The signal needs to pass through the wall of a metal barn, and an exterior wall of a standard frame house. None of my current weather stations could do the job, so to Amazon I went. I purchased two weather stations at the same time hoping that one would work. The AcuRite 75077 Weather Forecaster with Jumbo Display in Monochrome is awesome. If all you want to know if the temperature inside and out, this weather forecaster is it!!! The numbers are large and easy to read, and the display is simple. But… even though it’s advertised as reaching 330 feet, it wouldn’t pick up the signal in the barn. The AcuRite 02007 Digital Weather Center is very difficult to read. I’m sure the screen color was designed to make it easy to read, but all it does is make it more difficult. The high and low numbers in the three forecast boxes on the bottom are completely unreadable. They’re too small, and there isn’t enough color contrast. If you plan to use the tabletop stand, be forewarned that it keeps the unit too upright making the display impossible to read. The display must be at eye level to be readable. If they angled the stand back a few degrees, it would be much better. While you can probably tell, I’m not a fan of the 02007 Weather Station weather station but I am keeping it because it is the ONLY weather station that reaches the barn with full signal. It is advertised as having a strong 433 MHz signal that penetrates walls and it is true. I mounted the unit on the wall at eye level to make it more readable so it does meet my goal. One more small nit about both units, the outdoor sensor doesn’t display the temperature. It should. All of my other sensors do and it makes it nice to be outside and tell the temperature without having to go back to the base.
