GOOD PRODUCT BUT BEWARE - ONLY 30 DAY WARRANTY
By Deac Lancaster on Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2014
Buffalo makes a great drive, but hard drives characteristically have a 5-10% failure rate in the first 3 months due to the mechanical parts "burning in" to run smoothly or failing completely. Mine lasted 75 days and then died, motor wouldn't even spin up (so, I lost the data, but did have a backup fortunately). I went to return the item and found the message to the effect "NO RETURNS AFTER 30 DAYS". I did not know of this policy for electronics (my bad, though it was a bit hidden), but should be 90 days for hard drives. Really made me look for other sellers after I've been so happy with Amazon. I finally found a way to send a message to Amazon and they immediately granted me a waiver and will refund my money (less $35 restocking fee). What a relief, Amazon again lives up to their fine reputation. I'm taking the refund and just ordered the Buffalo 4TB drive from Amazon, but I did buy the $11 two year warranty now that I know of their 30 day limit includes hard drives. THE RETURN POLICY FOR HARD DRIVES SHOULD BE CHANGED TO 90 DAYS. Most electronics, 30 days is fine, but the mechanical devices, especially hard drives, need a bit longer to settle in or die. Thank you Amazon for responding so well (again). You've kept me as a loyal customer. -deac

Awful service.

Well, that was frustrating. I got this drive as a gift from my fiance. I'm a former computer technician. It was an excellent gift. Unfortunately, after a week or two and very limited, appropriate use, it stopped being recognized by computers. USB chipset in the drive probably died. It happens. So I contacted Buffalo, and did an RMA. It was a little bit of a pain in the neck, but they weren't too bad about it. I sent them the drive. They Fedexed back the fixed or replacement drive. Fedex did not do what they normally do and come into my apartment building and drop the drive off at my apartment door or mailbox, nor did they leave a note. Instead - at least as far as I can tell from what they said - they left the drive on the building's front doorstep. My apartment was in a busy part of town with a wide variety of people passing by. There is essentially zero chance that a box left on the building's doorstep, a couple of feet off the sidewalk, is going to make it to me. Indeed it did not. I assume it was stolen, although I suppose it's possible Fedex never put it there at all. This started a months-long saga in which I tried to get either Buffalo or Fedex to take some responsibility. Buffalo's position was basically that once they gave the box to Fedex, it wasn't their problem. Fedex's position was that a) they delivered it, which in essence they didn't; and b) they couldn't do anything just because a recipient complained; they needed a complaint from the sender, which Buffalo wouldn't do. So, basically, we paid a couple of hundred bucks to use a drive for a few days, plus the pleasure of God only knows how many hours arguing with Buffalo and Fedex. Thanks! Quite sure I'll be avoiding both as much as possible in the future.
