GOOD PRODUCT BUT BEWARE - ONLY 30 DAY WARRANTY
By Deac Lancaster on Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2014
Buffalo makes a great drive, but hard drives characteristically have a 5-10% failure rate in the first 3 months due to the mechanical parts "burning in" to run smoothly or failing completely. Mine lasted 75 days and then died, motor wouldn't even spin up (so, I lost the data, but did have a backup fortunately).I went to return the item and found the message to the effect "NO RETURNS AFTER 30 DAYS". I did not know of this policy for electronics (my bad, though it was a bit hidden), but should be 90 days for hard drives. Really made me look for other sellers after I've been so happy with Amazon. I finally found a way to send a message to Amazon and they immediately granted me a waiver and will refund my money (less $35 restocking fee). What a relief, Amazon again lives up to their fine reputation. I'm taking the refund and just ordered the Buffalo 4TB drive from Amazon, but I did buy the $11 two year warranty now that I know of their 30 day limit includes hard drives.THE RETURN POLICY FOR HARD DRIVES SHOULD BE CHANGED TO 90 DAYS. Most electronics, 30 days is fine, but the mechanical devices, especially hard drives, need a bit longer to settle in or die.Thank you Amazon for responding so well (again). You've kept me as a loyal customer.-deac

TWO drives failed within 3 weeks.
By Loren on Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2014
I purchased TWO of these, one for my video archives and one as a backup for said video archives. They were super fast and I was very happy with them, until one drive died within 3 weeks of almost no use other than moving files to it and then backing it up to the other. It ceased to mount or show in any recovery software.I was bummed but glad I had a backup. I went on vacation for a week and figured I'd send back to Buffalo upon return for RMA... When I tried to mount the second drive... nothing. Both are goners. It's got to be the drive board in the case (the DDR so to speak). The disks themselves are Seagate Barracuda 3TB high quality drives and there's no sign of hardware failure. Super disappointing I'm now having to do deep drive scan data recovery on one and my only recourse is to get two more of these as replacements from Buffalo... which I most definitely do NOT want. I don't trust these anymore with the large number of failures and the fact that I had TWO die on my within weeks is just ridiculous. DO NOT BUY THESE. I don't know if it was a bad batch or what, but they are simply not reliable.
