Great for all ages and a perfect family project!

I bought this kit as a Christmas gift for my cousin's seven year old son. He went absolutely wild for it! He's the type of kid who loves all things science. Dinosaurs are at the very top of the list, so this seemed the perfect gift to give him. Last year I bought him a similar kit, but it was uncovering crystals instead of dinosaur specimens. He really loved the crystal kit, even going so far as to say it was his favorite Christmas gift. So when he unwrapped his gift this year and saw it was a dinosaur dig kit, he went nuts. He tore into it on the spot to begin reading the booklet and began to examine the tools, which include a magnifying glass, a couple brushes, and a kid safe chisel. Parents can be comfortable with the tools included (namely the chisel) because they are not sharp enough to cause injuries but sturdy enough to break into the cleverly shaped dino head. My cousin sent me some pictures on Facebook and told me that he and his twelve year old sister had a blast getting the tooth and bone, but wouldn't you know it...the dino dung was the real winner! That gave me a good chuckle. So both kids, their mom and grandmother had fun with this project. His birthday came up in late January and he wanted another Dr. Cool kit. I think that speaks loads about this and other kits from this brand. I will absolutely buy more from the Dr. Cool brand because I love to encourage this kind of hands on learning. There is a little bit of a mess created when chipping away at the plaster, but nothing that some well placed newspaper and a dustbuser can't handle (for those who are against making too much of a mess, probably best if done outside on the porch or something). All in all, I would highly recommend this for kids aged 7-13 with any interest in science, dinosaurs, or crafts of any kind. It is also a great thing to do as a family. Happy fossil hunting!

Get the bug dig kit instead.

My son and I dug through his 'rock' and found a couple of what looked like regular rocks. There was one dinosaur tooth that actually looked like a real artifact, but the other two items were boring and took forever to find. They were all bunched together on one side, so we took 30 minutes to get through all that for very little in return. I bought my daughter the dig kit with bugs which were evenly dispersed and very interesting. I felt bad for my son who wasn't finding anything while his sister was shouting in excitement over all the cool bugs she was finding. I recommend the bug kit over the dinosaur dig kit.
