good sound, good wireless function
By Jerrod Kowalski on Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2014
12-26-14 update; A reader commented that all you need to do to avoid the echo is turn off the TV speakers if your TV has that function. Duh. i put off writing reviews about tech stuff sometimes. i thinks it is because i feel as if i should be writing a novel to do the review justice. this is not a novel, this will be short and sweet. first off this is a discontinued model, so not sure you can buy it anymore. here is what i think; Likes; 1. my TV remote (and Tivo remote) makes the volume change on this system. 2. it is not an obnoxious sound bar. those are ugly, expensive and ridiculous. 3. it is well designed and looks good. 4. it sounds good 5. volume range is good 6. the bluetooth connection to other bluetooth devises works well (i used my iPhone and it sounded awesome). Dislikes and other comments; 1. you have to get use to the sound not coming on for about 5 to 7 seconds after start up. it goes to sleep when there is no sound received, see next comment. 2. it shuts off automatically after no sound received for about 90 seconds or 2 minutes. so if you pause a show and come back in 5 minutes, the sounds takes 5 seconds to start but the show has started as soon as you hit play. 3. there can be an echo if you don't do the volume correctly/know how to do the volume. there is a delay with the system because of the digital sound or the optical inputs or the system or whatever. so if the TV speakers are loud enough to hear and the system is working there is a double sound track. it's way annoying. to avoid this you have to drive the TV sound all the way off, then use the dedicated remote for this speaker system to drive that sound only back up, then go back to the original remote. that normally works unless you drive the sound on the system down too low after having the TV at zero. when you drive the sound up again the TV speakers go up with the system sound and the problem is back. if you pay attention and remember how to operate the remote (within a range) you are fine. if someone else is not aware of the way it works, it gets screwed up every day. Update; turn off the TV speakers if it has that option. despite the issues i still like these. i would prefer the same features without the echo and the delay in the wake-up. my guess is the next Gen will correct those issues, but at what price?

Great sound quality, but difficult with DVRs
By M L on Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2013
We have a huge living room (more of a great room) with vaulted cathedral ceilings, so when I saw the size of the Onkyo speakers I was skeptical they would be able to fill the room appropriate with sound. Rest assured, the fears were unfounded. The system sounds spectacular in a large room, the design of the speakers and subwoofer being very efficient and making the most of its watts. The wireless subwoofer is especially convenient for those of us with larger rooms, and it works great. One complaint about the sub: the bass levels vary so drastically between inputs, you will find yourself constantly changing sub level along with the volume based on what you're watching. Even something like a football game will have me changing sub levels versus watching a TV show, much less movies or xbox games. Sound: The quality is spectacular, with highs coming through crystal clear. The system is a little light on the midrange, but that's to be expected when you're only dealing with two speakers this size. The subwoofer creates bass, but it is more the hollow lower-fill than room-filling bass. I have a Velodyne hooked up to our main sound system in the basement and that sounds far better. For basic movie & television watching, this subwoofer works fine. If listening to music is your thing and you like music which highlights lower frequencies (hip hop, electronic, etc), the subwoofer will leave you wanting more. Not bad, mind you, but.... lacking, I guess is a better word. Not enough to delete a star rating, however. Finish: the speakers have a rough textured finish to them and are matte in color, which lends a real sense of quality. If you run your fingers across the top, they are not smooth plastic but textured metal. The subwoofer is a slightly more glossy black with a downward-firing 6.5" paper cone woofer. The main module is about the size of a VHS cassette tape, and probably a bit lighter than one too. It is attractive and although it's plastic, it wouldn't look out of place in a million-dollar home. Bluetooth: works well, quickly & easily pairs with all of our devices (apples iOs, android, computers, etc). Speaker mounts: the mounts are genius. You can mount the speakers 4 different ways (2 horizontal options, 1 vertical, 1 wall-mount) with the included stands. It's a small brilliant piece of engineering that really adds value to the system. The stands are high-quality metal with rubber feet. Remote: it comes with a tiny credit-card remote which works well, but the system has the excellent capability to "learn" the commands of your other remotes, and you can program multiple remotes for various functions if need be (you are not limited to one). This is one of the main reasons I purchased the system, honestly. I don't like having 3+ remotes for all the various systems, and this learns well. I was able to pair every remote in my house to the system. Now we can use just one remote for the TV, DVR, and Onkyo - and it doesn't have to be an intelligent remote either. We're just using the Tivo remote for all. Wiring: The system comes with plenty of white-shielded wiring, which can be both convenient and frustrating. If you were to wall-mount the speakers, white speaker wire would be nice and less obvious to run exposed. But for the 99% of the rest of us who rest these on an entertainment center, counter, or a desk, thick white wires coming out of the black control module and black speakers looks less-than-clean. This is strictly subjective, of course, but it would have been nice to have black speaker wire for uniformity. Auto-sensing Power on/off: This is the part that *should* make the system more convenient, but I found in practice makes it more troublesome. One of the selling points to me about the system was the auto power-on sensing ability of the optical input. If you plug it into your receiver or cable box, it automatically turns on when it senses audio signal. This is extremely convenient and what sold me on the system. What I did not consider (and this is no fault of Onkyo's, hence the full 5-star rating), is DVRs are turned on all the time. The Onkyo always senses the continuous signal from the DVR and thus always stays on. If I pause a DVR program and turn off the Onkyo at night, the next morning I will find it on again (invariably the DVR eventually defaults to live TV no matter what you're doing, and when it does the Onkyo senses the signal and turns back on). Our solution so far has been to either mute the Onkyo (only works while it is on, but when it turns off and back on it unmutes itself), or leave the volume at 0 when we're not watching, so it stays on all the time but doesn't play sound audibly. This is an extremely minor annoyance, but it's something I hadn't though about when I ordered the Onkyo system. Running the optical cable through the TV itself did not remedy the solution, so we're still looking for a better workaround (wish that functionality could be switched off, in retrospect). In all, I love the system and would order it again. I just need to find a workaround for the DVR issue. If anyone else has one, please let me know what worked for you. UPDATE 05/2016: Our Onkyo subwoofer died before the two year mark and conveniently just outside of the warranty period, leaving us with only frequencies above 100 Hz. It sounds really terrible without the subwoofer, like tweeter-only bad. I knocked the 5-star rating down to 1 star because of how terrible Onkyo support was throughout the ordeal. The company directed us to a local authorized repair center that is no longer in business. The company then tells me they cannot replace or sell me a new subwoofer unit. My only option was to send the subwoofer to California for repair service but they couldn't tell me how much it would cost to repair (I was told it could be up to $400). If I include shipping (which I was on the hook for), I'm about near the cost of a new system, plus the month of downtime without a sound system. Boo Onkyo, you lost a lifelong fan of your brand over such poor customer service. If you won't have regional service centers around the country at least step up the return/replace/warranty game.

Great product, glad that I purchased this to replace ...

Great product, glad that I purchased this to replace my 8 years old 5.1 speakers from Phillips. This 2.1 system blows away the old one for sure! It actually arrive 1 day earlier than expected. The built quality of the 2 satellites and the subwoofer is good, it's sturdy and sleek. The controller unit looks a bit cheap though. i connected to my computer through optical output, and it works fabulously. It does awesome job to simulate surround sounds when I test AC3 sound. Music sound crisp and clear, the bass is strong and solid, it responses well with low frequency. Some people complain that the bass is too strong, but you can adjust it to suite your taste. The auto-shutdown mode is nice, there is a delay when it wakes up, but not a long delay, it doesn't bother me much. I am not an audiophile, but I play piano and keyboard for more than 10 years, so I am picky when it comes to music and sound, you can trust me on that. The bluetooth works well, I personally don't use it much, but it is nice to have. I also use Breakaway Audio Enhancer with it, and it even make the speakers shine more :) I did get some pop and crack noises when using with DFX Audio Enhancer, but not so with Breakaway, so I suggest you use Breakaway if you want to enhance your experience :) One thing to note, these are not magnetic shielded speakers, so if you are looking for one, don't bother. It doesn't matter much nowadays when LCD is everywhere, but just a caution. I think Bose Cinemate series has a shielded speakers, but it's over price right now. I personally prefer Bose, but this thing is as good as Bose, and cheaper!
Great sound, but inconvenient if you switch input often!

These speakers have a lot going for them, especially now that they can be had for under $250. They sound beautiful, they look nice, and the subwoofer is wireless. I wanted to keep them so badly. Unfortunately, they have some limitations that made them unusable for my application. I need to connect via Bluetooth to a laptop and occasionally a phone, use digital input for a desktop computer, and use 3.5 from my display/TV for XBox sound. The Onkyo LS3100 has quirks that made this setup a pain to use. I ended up getting a Boston Acoustics Soundware XS instead, even though it didn't sound as good as the Onkyo. If you just have a TV that you leave set up and only occasionally need to switch to another input, this could be a fantastic product. Pro: -Sound was very crisp and clear. Listening to the "Batman Begins" soundtrack was amazing; I could hear all the percussion clearly and the sound was very dimensional. The BA Soundware XS was muddier and less defined. Classical music was nice as well, very clean. Soundware XS was warmer, but also less clear. -Quality. Design was aesthetically pleasing and materials were nice, although the control box felt a bit plasticky in comparison to the rest. But the lights on the control box were wonderfully subtle, no glaring obnoxious lights like the Soundware XS. The speakers had great metal stands that allowed for 4 different configurations. The sub has cute piano finish feet and is wireless. -Control subwoofer level on remote -Auto-on when input is detected Con: -It's impossible to use the optical input when there is anything plugged into the 3.5 mm jack. There is no switch anywhere that lets you switch between them, and the manual admits this. -There is an auto-standby function that cannot be disabled! This sounded good in theory, but in reality, this meant that Bluetooth would automatically disconnect after 5 minutes of silence no matter what. I would then have to reconnect by pressing the Bluetooth button on the remote. This became intolerable when connected to a laptop. If I wanted to watch a video after working in silence a while, I would have to remember to reconnect first because my computer would not switch over on the fly. In the end, the lack of ability to switch inputs and the constant Bluetooth disconnects made me decide to return the product in spite of the great sound and look. The Soundware XS has an input switch on the remote and stays connected to Bluetooth until disconnected, and those two features alone were worth it in spite of the XS having an ugly receiver, poorer sound, no sub control on remote, no wireless sub, and obnoxiously bright lights. The Onkyo LS3100 would probably be great if you leave it hooked up to a TV and only occasionally listen to one or two songs from Bluetooth, but if you need something that plays nice with all your devices, its limitations may prove to be highly annoying.

I bought this in early January. After reading all of the stellar Amazon Vine reviews, i thought this was going to be an awesome purchase. Setting this up was very easy and straight forward. The packaging was awesome and all of the components seemed to be of very high quality. The subwoofer is sub-par and the speakers are average at best. Movies sound OK and music is pretty terrible. I listened to the bose cinemate in stores and those sounded a lot better (although i wouldn't recommend Bose). You're probably better off going with a 5.1 onkyo system or something else. My friend has the 7.1 onkyo package with the 2 towers, and that sounded much better than this one (although it is a few hundred more). [Update 2/24/2013] I ended up buying the Onkyo HT-S9400THX, and I have to say that they are AMAZING(I'm using them in a 5.1 setup). This sounds like a real home theater system. The biggest problem is that the Onkyo HT-S9400THX takes up a lot more space since it is is a 7.1 and the Onkyo LS3100 is a 2.1. The Onkyo HT-S9400THX is currently going for $649.99 on amazon. It's only $150 more than the Onkyo LS3100 and it sounds at least 10 times better.

Blows Bose Cinemate II Away

Ok, so I have been looking for a while for a good system that will fill my home with quality sound. I checked as many reviews as I could on the Bose Cinemate 2 and then while looking at those reviews I found the Onkyo LS3100 ENVISION CINEMA 2.1-Channel Bluetooth Speaker System. I was so undecided on which one to buy, so I purchased both. I received the Onkyo first and could not believe how amazing it sounded. Not only the sound, but also the functionality and quality of the components shocked me. I am not a newbie to this stuff and I am telling you it is amazing. So anyway, I had the Onkyo for almost a week and the Bose arrived. I was so sure I was going to be packing up the Onkyo and shipping it back. I hooked up the Bose and kept the Onkyo hooked up also. I have two Iphones and one of them I use as an ipod only. I loaded several of the same songs on both phones and began my comparison. The Bose has a nice sound, however it is very controlled and no options to customize the sound aside from the bass which is adjusted only on the back of the sub (pain in the butt) The sound quality seems hazy, muffled and slightly plastic compared to the Onkyo. The Bose bass was nice, but the highs were so lacking that it was a deal breaker for me. When I played the exact same song on both systems, it was so obvious that the winner was the Onkyo system. The highs, lows and bass are kicking and so clear with no distortion once so ever. I cannot believe I am sending the Bose back and keeping the Onkyo. This is set up in our living room that is quite large with high ceilings and my biggest concern was filling all that space with bass and clarity. I am amazed, blown-away and shocked at how great this sounds. Pure music streamed from Bluetooth to the Onkyo is clear vs. the RCA adapter I had to use for the Bose. Trust me, on this review. I never take the time to write a review with this much detail, but I feel it is my way of helping someone out there that is as confused as I was. I really hope this helps someone.

Let me start by saying that this is my first Onkyo purchase. (This replaces a several year-old Sony Blu Ray 5.1 system) Overall I'm thrilled with this purchase: 1.) My wife is happy that we got rid of an "extra" remote 2.) I'm happy that we can once again discern speech when watching shows 3.) We can directly stream music via bluetooth for parties without dealing with the TV. (Ironically, video quality on my Samsung LCD TV has improved significantly, as the Sony's HDMI switching system seems to have been degrading HD video... nice unexpected side-effect, but not relevant to the onkyo) I found that out of the box the system needed a little tuning. Once I figured out the two (yup, 2) audio settings, I used the non-voice mode and adjusted the bass. I put the wireless subwoofer in a corner of the room near the TV. The alternative to this product was the crowded sound bar market, and frankly this was a far better value and fit our space needs. This package fits nicely in our theatre furniture without the 'bar' look. Plus the speakers are out of the way of the kid's reach as they fit in two small shelves above the TV. Bluetooth setup to iPhone/iPad/MacBook Pro works great & I find it's simpler to stream to for parties than the AppleTV. No annoying screen saver or sleep mode to deal with. Push the bluetooth button on the small Onkyo box, and switch your iPhone to the bluetooth output. voila. party's on. Note: This is not our "home theatre" setup -- this system is used on our main floor and is primarily used for day-to-day TV/Netflix watching. Works & sounds great and doesn't require a tutorial to family/ friends to use.

I bought this speaker on Amazon. It is great. It is not hard to setup. The subwoofer is wireless, which can be good and bad. The good side is you can put is anywhere in the living room without worry about the wires. The bad side is it requires separate power cord. But it is no bid deal. The bluetooth function is a real plus compare to Bose Cinemate. The overall performance of this set is great. One thing i really don't like about this set is the wires/cords for the 2 front speakers. They are not plug-ins. They are cords with 2 naked copper wires in the end. You have to clip them on the speaker. it seems easier to break than simple plug-in cords. I don't know why Onkyo don't use regular plug in cords, they are stronger and harder to break. I really worried about breaking the cords by accident pulling the speaker or something. Also, the cords are big and in white color. That really makes the whole system messy. Because it is really hard to hide two big white cord when everything on/in the TV stand are black. The picture of the system in the living room is misleading since it has no cord on it. With these white cords, the whole system is not as neat as i thought. The other thing is, the sound is really crispy and clear. which is probably some people wants. But when comes to watching movies, I think the sponge layer outside the Bose Cinemate is way better. The sponge make the sound more "Theater like". They make the sound less crispy but more "theater like" if you know what I mean. I wish Onkyo can make some Sponge Covers to put on the 2 front speakers for me to purchase. I believe most people uses this system for movies rather than music or concerts. At least give us some option. Overall this system is good. But I hope Onkyo can listen to us and maybe make some changes. It is comparable to Bose Cinemate, especially it has bluetooth. But if it has sponge cover to fit my taste, i will definitely prefer this over Bose.

Overall this is a solid sound system ... especially if you are on a budget and looking for a clean setup... Setup... OK ... this system is super easy to set up. Plug everything in and it just works. I have the control unit plugged into the back of a current generation Samsung TV with the provided optical cable. No issues at all with the audio being in sync with the video. We use an older Motorola DVR as our cable box ... the remote for the DVR and the TV remote both auto-magically worked with the Onkyo unit for controlling volume. Love the wireless sub ... works beautifully ... I tried several locations and found that placing the sub further from where you are sitting results in smoother bass. I purchased this because I didn't like the look of a sound bar or a base unit across the front of the TV. But I also didn't want wires to the sub. This fit the bill. Movies... When watching movies or sports at higher volumes, this setup shines. Set the sound mode on SRS WOW and you get great bass and very nice simulated surround. Audiophiles will probably not be blown away, but if you just want a great audio experience, this is a clear step up from TV speakers. Regular TV... We also like to watch "regular shows" at lower volumes in the evening, this is where the unit struggles a bit. The SRS Clear Voice mode works pretty good. However, the processing muddles the sound just a bit ... still better than the built in speakers in the TV, but barely. We have the Bose cinimate set up on another TV ... if that had a wireless sub, we probably would have purchased it again. The Bose unit is better for clarity at lower volumes ... which is our primary listening mode...
