Excellent patio/back door light
By SanLeandroGuy on Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2025
Bright, responsive, good battery life.....had to replace the batteries after over two years of service. The light is very bright, extends from the patio doors about 15 feet onto the patio, and the motion sensor works as expected. I mounted this under the roof eave, so weather is not an issue

interior water problem
By FWIW on Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2019
after having some of these up or a few months, water has collected in the interior. the electronics are positioned near the face, which is where the water collects (the face plate, with the light and motion detector, is pointed down). the faceplate pointed down orientation is necessary and causes the unit to eventually quit working as water accumulates at the faceplate. the water appears to come from collected humidity condensation on the batteries, although rain leakage is possible around the screw in face plate assembly that gives access to the batteries. at this price point it is almost impossible to manufacture a unit that is air tight. It is maybe water tight (rain). i have not found another product of this type so i will attempt to combat this problem. my approach is to put a strip of tape (black duct tape for brown units and foil tape for white units) around the seam where the unit screws together (allowing battery access) and to put a thin bead of clear exterior caulk around both where the motion sensor and light protrude through holes in the face plate. btw - because the batteries have significant mass, they store the cool nighttime temperature. that cooler temperature will condense daytime humidity. when it is time to put new batteries in it you will need to remove the screw on portion, so be sure you use something to seal it that will not impede unscrewing it so you can change batteries later. they detect the motion of even small animals, moving fast because the same animals moving slow don't trigger the light. since i have deer, raccoons and squirrels around here i have to be careful where i aim the units. so far the batteries seem to last over a year in the most frequently used lights but realize that alkaline batteries do not work well in the cold and that the battery electrolyte uses water, which can freeze if it gets cold enough long enough (like -10F for 4 or 5 days.) if you do not want to replace batteries often do not place these lights near pedestrian paths or road traffic, which activate them frequently. alkaline batteries have about a 10 year life when unused. sometimes they come with aluminum mounting screws and sometimes with steel mounting screws. they used to come with steel screws all the time. i guess the change is intended to help hold down the price but doing this may reflect on other things the manufacturer does to keep cost down. anyway, the aluminum screws can be used but with caution. if you use an electric drill be careful when tightening them down because they use soft aluminum so tightening them can result in twisting the heads off. if you twist off the head you can put another screw in the same mounting hole if you angle the screw to the side so the prior screw won't get in the way. the best way to deal with twisting heads off is to use the electric drill to drive the screw most of the way and use a manual screwdriver to finish screwing it in (you can still twist off the head if you tighten it too much). if you have some old short steel screws that have coarse threads use those. i will update this review when the lights have been outside for months and i can see whether my efforts to combat interior water collection worked. update 10/10/19 just checked some of the units that i sealed so they were air tight (see above). they were bone dry after going through the summer outdoors. tomorrow starts cold temps here in colorado so i will leave them mounted outside to see if they continue to be dry.
