An excellent choice for me
By AspenGal on Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2013
I don't have an iBrain - won an iP*d at a conference, tried using it for 3 months and sold it to a co-worker due to my frustration-factor. I definitely prefer Android to Apple ios, I've discovered. After much internet-searching, I decided to buy myself a 9" Kindle FIRE HD for Christmas with some Amazon gift cards. A very good choice on my part! I'm already a member of the Amazon-universe (have owned 2 Kindles [2nd-gen and Touch], have the Kindle reader on my desktop PC and netbook, am a Prime member, shop Amazon quite a bit) so the FIRE has fit right in to 'my' electronic universe. I did not need or want a replacement for my desktop PC - the FIRE provides a nice alternative for access to most of the functions I want to use while traveling or at work (where many websites like YouTube and personal email sites are blocked on those computers). I did not purchase the 3G version, since Wi-fi works for my purposes. Wi-fi is pretty widespread around the U.S. I've had no problem accessing wi-fi while traveling internationally either, in Turkey, Ireland, Australia, since most hotels now offer free wi-fi. While traveling I like to keep track of local weather where I'm staying, home emails, US news, pay ebills while away, check out local entertainment venues, etc. I have a small netbook which I've taken with me in the past for this purpose...now my FIRE will handle everything I did with my netbook, while being smaller and more lightweight to carry. My 9" FIRE fits in most of my handbags except the smaller cross-body bags. I'm not a big gamer, nor do I want to store a lot of videos or movies on my FIRE, so the 16G version works for me. I still have 87% of my available memory left, so I CAN download a few movies for the long flight to Venice this fall. I have watched some TV shows via the Xfinity app (our local cable company) - all but one worked very well with my home wireless router, with no stopping-and-starting or freezing of the video. I'm a photographer, and will NOT be using the FIRE for photos since I have a nice digital camera. It seems very awkward to me to attempt to use any tablet as a 'camera'. That function was not important to me in my decision. The HD screen is very sharp and colorful (even my die-hard Apple friends admit '...it looks GOOD!'). The touch-screen is sensitive (although it helps to frequently clean the oily fingerprints from it - I clean it daily just before I start the overnight re-charge). Adding my gmail email account to it was very easy, I've added the VMWare app for access to my work computer, and several other apps which I've used on my desktop PC and find work well on the FIRE also (I've reviewed many of them on the Amazon website). I still prefer reading books on my Kindle Touch (easier to hold in my hands for a long time), but I do read on my FIRE when I'm also using it for other things (emails, YouTube, checking emails, etc). Amazon's 'syncing' of last-page-read works very well for both devices (as long as I remember to turn on the wireless on my Kindle Touch while I'm reading). I bought the Amazon cover for my FIRE (though I choked at the $40 pricetag); it works pretty well for propping it in a horizontal alignment (although it does 'slide' flat occasionally on slick surfaces), not very good for vertical since there's no viewing angle adjustment (I seldom use it in that way, though a couple of apps display ONLY in the vertical mode). I like how slim this cover is - doesn't add much bulk to my FIRE, and seems to protect it well. For use at home and my job it works fine. I'll probably buy another cover, though, once more are available for this new 9" HD-version of the FIRE; a cover which will allow multiple angles in both the horizontal and vertical positions (I have one of those for my older 7" Galaxy tablet, and it works very well). I ALWAYS buy at least 2 extra power cables for every electronic device I own; per other reviewer's advice, I bought the non-Amazon AC 'rapid-charger' which was half the price and works much better than trying to charge via USB. I took the USB-only 'charging cable' which came with the FIRE to work, so I can plug my FIRE into my desktop computer while using it there. Other reviewers are correct in stating re-charging via the USB function is VERY slow. In fact, my FIRE tells me when I turn it on that it won't "re-charge" the battery while I'm using it; however, it does MAINTAIN my battery charge while in use, so at least I'm not draining it. LOVE my 9" Kindle FIRE HD...I'm much happier with it than I was with the iP**. Good choice for me - hope this review helps other make good choices for THEM.

Kindle Fire H.D. Review By Countrygdreamer

I got this Kindle Fire H.D. a few days ago. I will continue to use it, however I am not as happy with it as I thought I would be. It has it's pros and cons, however I think the Kindle Fire H.D. should still be a work in progress. Amazon should take steps to make this even better. I used to have a full size I-Pad that tore up after 2 years. I got away from Apple mainly because of that. What I can't understand, Is how Apple can make a full size I-Pad so lite and thin, and Amazon can make this Kindle Fire H.D. so heavy! This is one thing I hate about this tablet. It feels really heavy. I think they should fix that. I have Rhapsody music service and I have the app on this product. When I first tried the music the screen froze up and the song would stop loading. Then when the song finally did play, it would play a little then freeze up and quit, skip some words and then start back. I had to call Amazon to get help with the music problem. So they told me to cut it off, hold the power button down a few seconds then restart it. So they hung on while I started a song. I played a little of it and it didn't' skip. However, I've been busy today so I really haven't had a chance to retry the music out. I don't really have any more cons, so I don't really know if it would freeze up playing movies on Netflix or not. However, this to me is ridiculous and I am very disappointed about it. I know it wasn't my internet because my music don't freeze up on other devices. I feel that the weight issue and freeze up issue should have been fixed before Amazon released this product for sale! It upsets me a lot. We as consumers pay high prices for these electronic products! Not everyone is rich and it Don't matter! For the rest of us that struggle and live below the poverty level, we should be getting the absolute best a product can be! Not a product that maybe Amazon thinks 1 or 2 minor technicalities. We can still market and sell these. Come on Amazon! Get real here! This could be a Christmas present for a child of a single parent who saved all year to get this present! It might be there only present. In my case, I make payments to HAN or ACC. I don't have credit so it is taken out of my check monthly till it is paid off. Maybe Amazon should create a policy that is new. This new policy being testers. These testers saying if they have found issues they didn't like about a Kindle product and wasn't happy with it. Why should they market one with a few flaws if they weren't' sure they would buy it themselves! Would Amazon like a heavy Kindle? Probably not. When it comes to any electronic and Kindle, we the consumer, deserve the most absolute, flawless very best product at 100% . We should not have to take second best just because all of us can't afford the newest, thinner, highest priced one's on the market. If Amazon found flaws that didn't make them completely happy and they weren't sure if they would buy it why should Amazon think we would be completely happy with it and would buy enough of it to put it in top sales? Amazon should have had all Kindles the best they could be with no flaws. Maybe their new motto should be: We are going to think of ourselves as the customer in future Electronic Developements. If we aren't completely happy with the product because of flaws how can we expect the consumer to be? We won't market future Electronics till they meet and exceed 100% Performance in all areas. As for the pros, it has a beautiful picture! The most awesome thing is the sound! You get a free built in app called Master Volume. With this, it has an equalizer and you can adjust that the base and other things making the sound incredible! So you get more freedom with controlling the sound. Also loads things fast and does great on the internet. Also the Kindle store gives you lots of free games and apps! If you are a member of Amazon Prime, which is a 79.00 once a year subscription you can get at Amazon.com, with that you get thousands of free movies you can watch on your Kindle, you can borrow books free from the Kindle store lending library with no return due date, and you get free two day shipping on anything you buy from Amazon.com with that membership. I was looking for a new 16 gig tablet since my 16 gig I-Pad tore up. One reason I chose a Kindle over another I-Pad was these are three times cheaper. Also with I-Pad you can get lots of free apps but when it comes to free books to borrow, free movies to watch and free two day s hopping you are just out of luck. Apple has no yearly membership so you have to buy every movie, book and no free shipping on anything. So Kindle has the ' real advantage there with a reasonable yearly price and all those free perks. I am no stranger to Kindle. I have the original Amazon Kindle, Kindle Fire 7", and this one. My favorite two Kindled as far as thinness goes is Origional Kindle and Kindle Paper White. Note though that these aren't't tablets. They just read and get internet. Kindle Paper White is touch screen and Origional Kindle is not. However, if reading is all you want to do then Kindle Paper White is definitely the one for you! Between Original and Paper White. Paper White is my favorite here because it has a built in light in it which you can adjust. You can also read in bed with it with no need to turn a light on and disturb your partner. I wanted the new Kindle HDX but the price is too high and I couldn't afford it at this time. In conclusion, if you are looking for a tablet in Kindle, I will just say this. You c a n always fix the weight issue and getting a case for it that stands up or laying it down when you are using it. Overall, Kindle Fire H.D. 8.9" is a fairly good tablet. With the few cons I have found, it's not the best but it's certainly not the worst. So if you can live with a couple of minor issues and do not want to pay the higher price right now for Kindle H.D.X. or I may have that backwards, D.H.X. it,s one of those. You may just have to weigh out the pros and cons also keeping in mind what more advantages you have with Amazon Prime Membership and you just have to decide after reading t his. More pros than cons or more cons than pros. This will help you decide weather or not Kindle Fire H.D. 8.9" is right for you.
