Highly recommend this rack

So far, that is. We ordered this last Monday and it was here by Wednesday. The package included everything we needed, and my husband had it installed in under 30 minutes. It currently holds two 29" mountain bikes, one 58cm road bike, and one comfort bike. There is plenty of room for the second 58cm road bike coming this week. Beyond that, with the two 29s on there, I'm not sure it would hold six bikes that could easily be removed. Note that - that could easily be removed. It would hold six, but you'd have to take more than one down to access one bike. This really frees up space in the garage and gets the bikes off the floor. Notes from other reviews I read prior to ordering: Size of lag bolts - Seriously? They are 2". If you put them into a stud, that's 1-1/2" into the stud. PLENTY! Hooks fall off - Seriously again? They snap onto the track. I can't see these falling off unless they were improperly installed in the first place. Hooks slide on track - Kinda. If you lift straight up and place the bike on the hook gently, they don't move. However, I am 6' tall so I can more easily reach the height to do so. If I were shorter or not as strong, I can see them moving. For the two end hooks, we installed cable ties around the track to either side of the hook and this holds them in place nicely. Height from floor - We took another reviewer's recommendation of hanging the track 8' from the floor. As stated above, we are tall so this is not an issue for us. There is about 3' of clearance under the tires, so it could be slightly lower, but having it at this height allows for some items to be stored underneath, like our trailer. All-in-all, we highly recommend this rack. It is compact, yet very sturdy and gets the job done easily and inexpensively. We could not have built a rack for the same price.

OK - Needs a bit more for the cost

Goods: 1) Could hold 6 bikes if you alternate bike orientations (handle bars up, down, up). 2) Powder coating is of good quality. 3) Steel brackets and bar are solid. Bads: 1) Screws provided are not long enough and could rip out. They are only 2". They should be 3". 2) Hooks slide around when trying to place a bike. Annoying. 3) Hook pops into place on bar with a small 1/8" lip. This lets you take off the hooks easily, but I have no need to. I knocked one off trying to get the hook through my tire. Worries me a bit. They should have made the hook base a square/diamond hole, to slide completely around the bar. Then it wouldn't have potential to pop out and fall down. Tips: 1) Buy your own Lag Bolts, 3". 2) Don't mount too close to a side wall, because the handlebars of an end bike may not allow it. Allow for that space, about ~"12 needed. 3) Consider mounting the bar away from the back wall, by shimming small 2x4s behind each mounting bracket. Would help get hooks around the tires more easily. 4) Don't mount bar too high as the other guy said. 8ft max, or you'll be lifting using weaker muscle groups and potential injury. Or, as the dad, you'll become the DEDICATED bike valet. Crap... 5) Use zip ties or drill holes/bolts into bar as a method of keeping the hooks from sliding around. 6) Use zip ties to keep the hook lips from "popping" out of place and falling down. Extra security. This is a good product and it does it's job. Get longer lag bolts. After it was all said and done, I actually kind of wish I just made my own out of wood. I could have probably used 2x4 for the bar, and just bought large bike/rake/ladder type of hooks to screw into it. Would have saved a lot of money and been pretty strong. If you're handy, consider that since this product is no more complex than that.

I gave this item 5 stars for the following reasons. Even the negatives stated below were not worth a star deduction. 1. I am Amazon Prime member. Ordered on Thursday and expected delivery on Saturday. It actually arrived on Friday. 2. I was able to install the item in the advertised 15 minutes without rushing. 3. I was able to hang 6 bikes with no problem as long as you alternate the direction of the bikes. 4. Quality was fine. Nice powder coat finish. 5. The hangers move whenever you hang a bike. This is no biggie. Once I finally decide where I want them permanently, I will use some sort of clamping system to prevent movement. A zip tie may even work. 6 I would not hang a high end road bike with light weight wheels from this rack as I do not like the pressure the hangers put on the wheels. The angle just makes me feel uncomfortable. 7. Be careful when deciding on the height. I put the bar 8 feet off the ground. I can hang the bikes easily at that height and I can still put something under them (including the front end of a car; not an SUV). 8. It could be a small challenge to get the middle bikes if you hang 6 bikes. Easy to access all the bikes if you only hang 4 bikes. The actual bar length is 51" but only 48" are usable. An extra foot would have been nice, even 6". So there you have it in a nutshell.
Good Value Solution For Multiple Bikes

Dude. Your garage is a mess. Let's fix it. First, you have too many bikes. You need something that will hold your bikes up, off the ground, against the wall in a relatively small space and this my friend, is a good solution. Hey! Its not perfect - but it should work well when properly installed. I purchased two of these 6 bike racks to hang 6 bikes in my tiny townhouse two car garage. Prior to purchase, I researched several possible solutions and for my situation, I felt the Monkey Bar system was the best value at its price-point for hanging 6 adult sized 29'er mountain bikes in a relatively small space. My search criteria was based on the following priorities: 1.) Budget = $200 or less 2.) Strength & Reliability 3.) Fit (using the least space possible.) 4.) Time - installation taking very little time. I also purchased and hung a 10' 2x6 across the wall at a height of approximately 6.5' to ensure the racks could be mounted securely anywhere along the 2x6 while distributing weight evenly across the entire wall. I used 3" deck screws to mount the 2x6 to the studs. With two racks side by side, the entire length required along the wall is about 102". I left some extra space between the racks so my installation is about 104" in length. I also had to ensure the bikes or hardware would not come contact or interfere with my garage door, track or sensors. I installed the racks to the 2x6 using the included hardware. This seemed tricky at first but was surprisingly simple to do. The rack bars sit about 6 inches below the garage door track. Fully loaded with bikes, the Monkey Bar racks and bike tires easily clear the garage door when it operates. However, I did have to move one rack as part of the door did make contact with the edge of the rack mount and bar as it open and shut. This was at the point where the garage door track curves. Make sure you have proper clearance before operating your door! Moving the Monkey Bars installation point was easy because of the 2x6. I did not have to rely on mounting to studs at 16 inch intervals. So... If one rack holds 6 bikes, why did I buy two? Many other reviewers mention that the 6 bike rack seemed crowded - with less than 6 bikes! If you have some combination like 4 adult bikes and two kids bikes, maybe you can get 6 bikes on one rack. But 6 same sized/similar sized bikes is too much. For me, two racks gives me plenty of space and options as I can easily move bikes around to get to other bikes. It also ensures the bikes don't get damaged as I wrestle them apart to go for a ride. With two racks I can also easily add to my bike collection (What? I like bikes!) or hang extra bikes as needed. What's not to like? This: Each bar has two spring loaded "buttons" which help keep the rack in place. During installation, one of the buttons easily slipped out of position and wedged itself inside the bar. Nice. It took me a few minutes to fix. I fished the button back into position using a small flat blade screw driver and a lot of foul language. (It works fine now but could have been a show stopper for someone less determined.) It could happen again so, 1 star deducted. Customization: A few reviewers complained about the movement of the hooks when attempting to hang bikes on the rack. I plan to use zip-ties or maybe even a set screw if this becomes a problem. I see why people feel this might be a problem but I haven't experienced it yet. Until then, don't fix what ain't broke.
Great Product, but not for everyone.

This is a terrific product: quality materials and quality workmanship. There are a number of adverse reviews of it, and for the life of me I cannot figure out why people are having trouble -- except that perhaps they can't be bothered to install it correctly or take the time to make sure it is well positioned. Properly hung, with the proper spacing from the wall, the weight of the bike holds the longer lip of the clamp and the whole top side of the clamp firmly against the bar. Manhandle ours as we may, we can't make a clip fall off with a bike on it. You CAN pop the hook off if you hit it from underneath while hanging the bike, but not with the weight of the bike on it. Near as I can guess, people aren't really getting the hook clamps solidly snapped into place. And yes, I will admit that if you're straining to hold the bike up and are basically making a lunge for the clip to hang the bike off of it, you're going to have trouble, but if you firmly hold the bike and gently hang it, you won't have any issues. We have 5 bikes on ours, and are able to space them so that each is easily removable without disturbing the ones on either side. The one criticism of this hardware that I'll accept as valid is the inclusion of standard slotted lag screws. They really should be Phillips or torx heads. All in all, a great storage solution, and much cheaper than the one I was planning to build.
Easy to install, turned some review items into a bonus.

This bike rack is easy to put up and get bikes on. I added a plank behind it to add more support since only 3 of the 4 studs in the area were being used. I weigh 215 pounds and I hung from the bar with absolutely no issues. The bolts it came with were fine for the extra plank but for the extra stud I used a slightly stronger screw. I read many reviews about not being able to fit 6 bikes and how annoying the hooks are because they slide. Allow me to retort. I easily fit two adult and four kids bikes and had room to spare. If I had another hook I could probably get my last adult bike on it. As far as the hooks sliding, I find this a bonus instead of fixing them in place. Bikes come in many different sizes. I think part of the reason I can fit all the bikes is that as I'm hanging them I can slide them closer together. This also helps if you need to get a bike from the middle where you can just slide then apart. Lift slightly and slide. Makes hanging and unhanging easy. Overall I like it a lot. It has freed up space in our garage for the bikes of the too many kids I have. If it falls down I'll update my review.

Easy to install on the wall in our garage. It came with 6 hooks, but it would be really hard to hang 6 adult bikes unless you were alternating hanging by the front and back wheels. We also have a bike with a baby seat that takes up a lot of space, so we were able to get 3 adult and one child bike hung up on it. HUGE space saver in our garage, it has been a game changer for keeping things tidy during bike season.

The product is very sturdy and well designed. It is easy to install if you have experience installing things that require finding studs behind sheet-rock and ensuring fasteners are secure in studs. I had two concerns...1) the instructions were very minimal, but adequate for an experienced DIYer, but might be a challenge for less experienced; 2) I thought the included fasteners were a little on the short side, so I replaced with longer lag screws which made me much more comfortable with the strength. Bikes are easy to load and take down and feel very secure. I am going to "fix" the sliding hooks in place so they cannot move, they tend to slide when loading/unloading...not a big deal but one easily fixed.

Great storage rack featuring easy installation and somewhat easy usage on-going

I should start by saying that I love this bike rack. It performs as advertised and let us reclaim much needed garage space by hanging our six bikes up against the wall. Installation: The directions weren't the clearest you'll ever receive but truthfully you could install this without even glancing at the instructions. You'll likely need a ladder and an assistant but with both you should be able to get this rack mounted to your wall in about 30 minutes or less. On-going usage: I don't have too much trouble getting the bikes up and down from the rack but keep in mind that if you're considering this rack (and this may seem obvious) but you need to lift and hold the bikes you'll be storing. So if you have heavy bikes or aren't able to lift them straight up in the air, consider an alternative storage system. That being said, assuming you're able to lift your bikes and hold them steady as you get the wheels locked onto the wheel racks that slide along the crossbar, you should have no trouble using this rack. My only complaint regarding this rack and the reason for deducting one star is that the wheel locks that slide along the rack's crossbar tend to slip and slide (horizontally) while trying to get the wheels locked in place. This can be frustrating and can result in it taking a few tries per bike when getting them back into storage. I wish Monkey Bar had thought of including a way to tighten the wheel locks in place along the crossbar. I should note, however, that once you have a bike hooked onto the lock on the rack, it is VERY stable and secure. I've never had any issue with a bike crashing down or becoming loose once I hooked it onto the rack. Final analysis: All in all a great bike rack that performs as advertised. I do wish they had included one additional design feature but that's almost quibbling. I would HIGHLY recommend this product for anyone in need of such a method of storing bikes.
Functional Value, Not Perfect

Does what I needed it to do, with some extra effort. I am storing 3 bikes (2 adult, 1 child) and with the extra room a double stroller on the rack. Construction of the bar is solid enough and install was easy. It took me another 10 minutes as the instructions say the outside brackets can be installed in any orientation, which I found to be false. If both are positioned with the 90-degree on the outside, the bar will shift and fall to the floor. So, orient with at least 1 of the brackets to the 'inside'. On my first attempt to mount a bike, I experienced what other reviewers have noted in the shifting/sliding of the hooks. To solve, I positioned the hooks (I only used 4) where I wanted them on the bar, then installed zip ties on each side to prevent them from sliding. This has done the job. This was the best value for a vertical bike storage solution I could find for my garage. In all, it took some learning to install and modify in order to securely position the bikes. I could only use 4 of the hooks, and still find it rather difficult to put-up/take-down the bicycles. When there is an 'open' position between hooks, my bikes will slide off the hooks a bit until repositioned, but not to the level where I am concerned they will fall off the rack. I would recommend this rack if you are looking for something affordable with a professional appearance. If you are looking strictly for function and on a budget, you could get the same or better results for much less by installing individual hooks on your studs. Overall, this works for me and I am satisfied with the purchase.
