The forest is my weightless and limitless fuel source

I am putting my review here with the 2-stove bulk pack option, because that is what got me interested in this wonderful little stove in the first place. I have a friend that I go backpacking (and fly fishing) with as often as we can get away, and food preparation is one of the luxuries that we like to take with us and play around and be creative with. We want to have our food be delicious and inspiring and yet we want our cooking gear to be light weight, trouble free and as invisible as possible. Both of us have been looking for that "perfect" backpacking stove, and have been asking about and looking at everything that others are using. We wanted to do our homework BEFORE we took the plunge into a new purchase. Because of a few troublesome challenges with my butane stove, I have been pretty interested in getting some miniaturized stove that uses the popular and inspired "rocket stove" concept, because I also wanted to have it available in a survival context. When my friend showed up for our last backpacking trip, he had TWO Solo Stoves in tow, and gave one of them to me as a gift. He had bought them in the 2-stove bulk pack on Amazon at a great discount. He challenged me to leave the security of my butane stove behind and go cold turkey with our new stoves. I accepted his challenge a bit reluctantly, because we were facing a weather forecast that include almost certain rain. Butane was a safer and more secure option. On our trip we had a light rain most of the time, and on one occasion it included quite a bit of wind. There was almost no dry wood to use for a fire. This is where I got to experience first hand one of the greatest virtues of the fire chamber construction that is used in the Solo Stove. Because it runs off of small diameter fuel, that fuel dries quicker after rain, and is further dried while in the fire chamber of the stove. We were able to gather abundant small-diameter fuel that was the driest in the forest by breaking off those small, dead and very abundant horizontal branches that are about waist or shoulder height on every pine and fir tree in the forest. They are about pencil sized and have probably been there for a decade or more. We had all of the seasoned, dry wood that we needed right there at our finger tips. The stoves worked great and very quickly gave us all of the high temperature heat that we needed. I love the well-though-out design and quality materials and construction that are used in the Solo Stove, and feel very secure with the stability of its solid and stocky base and its three-pronged pot support that doesn't let the pot teeter. Watch the videos on the Solostove.com website. They are very helpful. I have now purchased my own 2-stove bulk pack so I can give a stove to each of my two sons. Goodbye butane, Hello Solo Stove! The forest is my weightless and limitless fuel source!

Strong materials in a bulky shape
By CopOut on Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2012
This is a beautiful, tough built stove and should give a user many years of use....as long as you don't mind it being difficult to light, difficult to feed (while cooking), taking up way too much room in your backpack, weighing too much, and finally being a tad on the difficult side to clean out. However, if all those difficulties appeal to you, then have at it. All in all, there are other wood burning stoves out there which are as much if not cheaper that do the job so much better and easier. Take your money and go look at a Emberlit Stove. Pure Bliss!
