Plastic...NOT terra cotta!!! Still a good product though.
By BackYardWildLife on Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2011
I gave this product 2 stars because I am EXTREMELY dissatisfied with the misrepresentation. I SPECIFICALLY bought this particular heated bird bath because I was led to believe it was made of terra cotta. NOWHERE in the description does it say that it's made of plastic. And the title says terra cotta. HOWEVER...having said that, I realized that if it had been made out of terra cotta it would've been too heavy to mount on my window (it is MUCH bigger than I thought). After some thought I've decided to keep it instead of returning it and I expect to be very pleased with it. I still prefer not to have heated items in plastic (I wouldn't want to drink water that had been sitting in a plastic container and I wasn't interested in doing that to my feathered friends, either) but since I'll be changing the water everyday it should be okay. I will post an update after some use with any specific pros or cons but it does seem to be a very nice item. The three mounting options are great and it's large enough for robins or blue jays etc. to bathe in, although I expect they'll mostly just be drinking in the cold winter months, and this bath will only be used for that time of year. For those who will be using it year round the cord is very short and can be tucked away and hidden for the times of the year when it doesn't need to be plugged in. UPDATE:I've had the opportunity to put this birdbath to use in some pretty low temperatures. It has performed without any problems of any kind. The temp has gotten as low as 8 degrees fahrenheit with no sign of the water freezing. No ice in the water. I'm posting a couple photos in the image gallery and one of them is from an 8 degree day. I'd definitely recommend this product if you don't mind filling regularly, since it is a bit shallow. It probably needs filling anywhere from everyday to every other day. But I would do this no matter what the size since birds need clean water and any bird bath gets dirty with a day or two of use. I mounted mine outside my window for two reasons. 1. ease of filling, just open the window and 2. viewing of the birds. ps - I was willing to change my rating from 2 stars to 5 but I've noticed they're still advertising the bird bath as terra cotta without so much as one word in the description to let the buyer know it's plastic, and only the COLOR is terra cotta. UPDATE:They added the information to the description of this product to include that it is made of plastic so I have happily changed my rating to 5 stars. UPDATE: Nov. 2015. It's been 4 years since I purchased this product and I have used it every single winter. It is now below freezing and the birdbath is still working beautifully. I could not be happier with the performance and durability of this product. Helpful hint: Anytime it gets really dirty, in order to prevent scratching the plastic which would harbor bacteria I use a plain magic eraser with water to clean it and it makes it look like new with zero scratches.

Farm Innovators Heated birdbath mounting bracket weld issue
By Woolieart on Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2025
I like the design of this birdbath & the fact that it can be mounted several ways. I have also had Farm Innovators heated birdbaths in the past, although they were ground models. My choice for mounting this bath was on a 4X4 post I have in my garden, the mounting bracket that came with the bath seemed straight forward & is made of good quality material. We measured & mounted the bracket to the post, put the plastic bath into the ring that holds it only to discover that the bath itself was tippy & would not sit level. My husband is a machinist and is (sadly) used to needing to "modify" things that should be simple to install. He discovered that the bracket that attaches to the post was welded onto the ring that holds the bath crooked! Bad weld job! After 2 shims & an extra screw for support, he has my birdbath level & secure. The moral of the story is that if you buy this birdbath be aware that you may have to do some work to make it right, I don't know if they all have faulty welds or if it is just a problem with a few. It was easier to have my husband modify the mount rather than return the unit & maybe face the same problem with a replacement. So far, it's working well, is simple to clean & the birds are using it in our 26-degree weather.

I just bought my third one of these in about 17ish years, and I was thrilled to see the product STILL being made and sold!!! The first one I bought lasted several years, and then a bad exterior plug shorted out and ruined it. I had the plug replaced with an industrial one (very well grounded too!), and bought a 2nd birdbath about ten years ago. Well, during a recent VERY cold snap, I noticed that I kept filling that one and then an hour or two later, I'd look out the window and it would be empty again and steaming. I examined it, and couldn't find any cracks in it. However, it did seem like the middle of the birdbath was puffing up. I also noticed that the birdbath seemed to be super hot (abnormally so) when I went to fill it. It looked as if the water was actually heating up very quickly and then evaporating (even from a distance, I could see the water bubbling like it was boiling, and steaming!). I attributed these problems to the fact that we'd had some super cold weather the previous week, and some ice had formed in the birdbath. I had used a garden tool to hit the ice hard and break it up, then cleaned and refilled the birdbath with fresh water. A week later when I had to fill the birdbath 3 times in one day, and noticed the upward "bulge" in the center and an abnormal heat coming from it, I assumed that I'd damaged it by banging it. So I came on Amazon and ordered another one. I never expected to find the same one still being sold, but VOILÁ! After I'd ordered a replacement,, and it was already en route to me, I decided to fiddle around with the positioning of the existing birdbath within the metal ring that's mounted to my garden fence. I spun it around and refilled it with fresh, cold water. Instantly I noticed that doing that seemed to make the birdbath hold more water. While I waited for the new one to arrive, I got the old one working again. But I decided to replace it anyway, just in case. Even though repositioning it stopped the bubbling, overheating, evaporation, etc., I chose to replace it just in case. My Dad was a Master Electrician, and he taught me never to mess around with things like that. Don't need my house burning down!! So... I very highly recommend that you buy this heated birdbath! My first one lasted about 7 years or so, my second one lasted about 10 years (and would've lasted even longer if I hadn't banged it hard with a garden tool), and I just bought my 3rd one. This is a high quality product that lasts a long time! Just be sure to buy a plug protector to keep water from getting into the electrical connection. Posting a pic of the one I use. Happy birding, and THINK SPRING!

We love these bird baths, i had one and it got used so much i bought another to sit right next to the one we have attached to a post. We call them drinkers because during our droughts and during cold weather when everything is frozen this is the only source of liquid water! Only down side is they need to be filled more often because they are shallow but that is also the strong point because birds will get in them more often when the water source is shallow, have you ever seen a bird other than water fowl take a bath in the middle of a pond? Buy this for the birds and they will reward you with visits!

Bought Dec. 2017 - water did not freeze. Now Dec. 2018 water is freezing solid.

Update December 2018- Water did not freeze first year. This year the water is freezing solid. I now go out every morning and dump the ice and fill with fresh water. I now have the birdbath tray sitting directly on the deck rail. This allows the tray to stay level- not using the mounting ring. Initial review:Bird bath will not stay level. It tips forward because the tray holding bracket is not properly designed or engineered. There are two short prongs that the metal supporting ring slides into that is not engineered well. The attachment may be too short to fully support to keep the tray level. I have taken a rubber mallet and have made the prongs closer to the metal ring to make it very tight to secure the tray. This helps a little to level it. Because the bird bath won't stay level the water level is high on outer area of birdbath but little or no water on the portion of the birdbath close to the deck railing. Because of this you need to fill it everyday. If this wasn't the case you would probably only need to fill it every other day. (The bracket to attach to the deck rail works fine.) The water has not frozen in the birdbath but we haven't had a lot of freezing weather yet. The birdbath is attractive and I like how it attaches to the deck rail and I like how it's easy to empty/clean- but I won't buy again because of the leveling problem. This product has received many complaints by reviewers about this problem. It appears the manufacturer/company has not responded to these complaints or corrected the problem. UPDATE: I sent the item back for a replacement. The second new one does not lean anywhere as bad as the original one. It is fairly level. Very happy I sent the leaning one back. The birds and squirrels love the birdbath - drinking from it all the time. We have had many days below freezing and the birdbath water has never frozen. Because the second one is so much better and the Seller replaced it without any hassle - I am changing the star rating from one to five. Further update 3/1/18: the water has not frozen once this winter. I recommend dumping out the water every day, quick rinse (use a watering can) of tray and refilling with fresh water. Thorough wipe down once a week. I feel it's necessary to rinse and put fresh water every day because the birds leave poopsies in the water! Overall, very happy with the bird bath. Love that you can easily empty it.

I have put out fresh water for birds daily for most of my 80 years on earth. I purchased this product on December 29, 2020 and I am still using my original purchase today, January 4, 2025. Never had any problems with it and I use it year round (unplugging it except for the winter). Today I am sending the information on it to my sister who lives out of town and thought I should finally write a review. This product works and it holds up well in constant use and in a 100% outdoor, direct sunlight environment.

I bought this 2 pack. I put one on my deck rail and at best it slants downward. I have a different brand in the summer that's not heated and it's made beautifully level for the deck rail. I put the other one on the ground and unbelievably the 4 legs don't click or screw in so they keep falling out as you try to put all 4 in and then don't try moving it unless you want to go through the whole process again. Lastly, they're higher in the middle so even though there's water in them, I still have to go fill them because I'm afraid they'll burn in the dry higher spot.
Heated bird bath

The built in bird bath heater worked well this Spring when we were hit with freezing weather several times. But, the bird bath IS very shallow so the heat speeds up evaporation, so I was refilling it twice a day. The electric cord that is attached to the bath keeps the bath from sitting firmly in the holding ring or even just sitting on a stand. The squirrels love it too. But their weight tips it over no matter how we set it up. We will continue to use the bath because it is so dry out and the birds are using it. Thank you
Overall pretty good

I bought this birdbath in Nov 2018. Overall I'm satisfied with it but I will say that I would prefer that it was a bit deeper so it would hold more water. It holds about 2 quarts but in very cold temps or in windy conditions it will lose about one quart to evaporation each day. So I have to fill it often, which isn't a big deal to me but it might be to others. The bath has performed well and never frozen over in temps down to -5 F. When temps get near or below 10-20 F the bath does get a small ring of ice around its perimeter but this is not an issue (for me or the birds) and otherwise functions perfectly well. In Feb 2019 a "polar vortex" came through the area for 3 days, dropping night-time temps to -24 F with daytime highs of -5 F. Since this product is only rated to -10 F, I contacted the manufacturer (Farm Innovators) directly to ask if I should bring the unit inside when temps go below -10 F, or if I should just unplug it. Their first response was "You can continue to use the unit if you want. It may experience some icing. Protect it from the wind if possible. If you choose to unplug it, we would recommend dumping the water out of it." My response to that was "Not trying to be difficult here, but the reply is a bit vague. Are you saying the unit will not be damaged in temps less than -10 F and that the only potential issue is that there could be some icing of the water held within? Icing occurs around the rim even at temps of 10-20 F and that's not a problem. My concern is just to ensure the unit itself is not harmed by being used in, or exposed to, temps lower than rated. I guess I would just like to ask for confirmation of that, please." They replied with "Since you are concerned about damage to the unit, please take it out of service during periods below -10° F." That wasn't the type of detailed answer I was hoping for. So, just to be safe, I emptied the unit and brought it inside for the 3 days when it was below -10 F. It's been back in service and working fine since then.
