Good Things Come In Small Packages

When I first checked out the dimensions of this GunMate Range Bag on Amazon, I was concerned with it being able to hold all of the shooting accessories and ammo I would need to take to the shooting range for my Ruger Security Six .357 Magnum revolver, a not-so-small handgun in its own right. After a good bit of thinking and planning, I decided all of the very positive reviews couldn't be that far off, so I ordered it on Amazon.com. After using it for the past several months, I can easily say the GunMate Range Bag was one of my very best Amazon.com purchases. The two zippered side compartments, each with its own padded gun rug, make it simple and safe to carry my Ruger Security Six with a Masterlock 3-digit Gun Trigger Lock, inside an Allen Co. Knit Gun Sock for Handguns, in one side compartment, AND my Beretta 92A1 9mm Semi-Automatic Pistol, inside an Allen Co. Knit Gun Sock for Handguns, along with a Condor MA37 Triple 30-Round Magazine Pouch holding three Beretta 9mm 30-Round Magazines, in the other side compartment. Two hook-and-loop (Velcro) dividers separate the central main storage compartment into three spaces for your gear and ammo. Here is a list of the shooting accessories I keep and carry in this central storage compartment in my GunMate Range Bag: In the front section -- a hard-sided zippered storage case holding three pairs of my protective/shooting glasses, each in a black microfiber protective/polishing pouch (one with clear lenses for indoor shooting, one with amber lenses for either indoor or outdoor shooting, and one with grey lenses for outdoor shooting in bright sunlight); 4-6 bagged pairs of Howard Leight Foam Earplugs; and one pair of Howard Leight Leightning L3 30 NNR Premium Shooter's Earmuffs In the rear section -- a UTG .38/.357/9mm Handgun Cleaning Kit, 25-30 Allen Co. Cleaning Patches, a pair of Hoppe's Double End Phosphor Bronze and Nylon Utility Cleaning Brushes, 5-6 Type III Double-Ended Cleaning Swabs, a Birchwood Casey Lead Remover and Polishing Cloth, a Hoppe's Silicon Gun Cleaning and Polishing Cloth, and a Scotch-Brite Heavy Duty Scrubbing Pad (for removing carbon around the forcing cone and gunpowder burns from the cylinder face of my revolver) in a small zip-lock bag; a 2 oz. bottle of M-Pro 7 Gun Cleaner, a 2 oz. bottle of M-Pro 7 Gun Oil LPX, and a tube of Tetra Red Rock Gun Grease in a small zip-lock bag; an 8 oz. spray bottle of Hoppe's Elite Gun Cleaner in a small zip-lock bag; one-half of a Hoppe's Gun Cleaning Pad upon which to clean my handguns; 3-4 bagged pairs of Black Talon Nitrile Gloves to protect my hands when using gun cleaners and other chemical products on my guns; a Leatherman Super-300 Multi-tool; a small repair tool kit; a Super Bright Nine-LED flashlight; an Otis Technology .38/.357/9mm Gun Cleaning Kit in a round, zippered case; a Travel-Pak of Kleenex tissues; a 4 oz. squeeze bottle of D-Lead Hand Soap and an 18-towelette pack of Wet Ones Antibacterial hand wipes, for washing up after a long shooting session, in a small zip-lock bag In the center section -- two full MTM 100-round .38/.357 Flip-top Ammo Boxes; two full MTM 50-round .38/.357 Flip-top Ammo Boxes; two full MTM 50-round 9mm Flip-top Ammo Boxes; two full 18-round .38/.357 Flip-top Ammo Wallets; a Modular 8-cell CR123A Battery Case; a Streamlight TLR-2S Rail-Mounted Tactical Weapon Flashlight w/Strobe and Red-Laser Sight inside a Streamlight TLR-2S Holster; an Otis Technology Optics Cleaning Kit in a round, zippered case; an HKS Double .38/.357 Speedloader Case; two HKS Mk-3 .38/.357 Speedloaders; a Federal "Six-Pack" 9mm 17-round Magazine Pouch; a microfiber gun cleaning cloth in a small zip-lock bag; and a hand towel for drying off my hands For safety and the security of everything in my GunMate Range Bag, on each side of the bag, I thread the cable of a Masterlock Keyed-Alike Cable Gun Lock up through a long, narrow opening on the carrying strap hardware, then thread it up through the hole in the end of the zipper pull for the center compartment and on through the matching holes in the two zippers on the side storage compartment, then back down into the cable opening of the Gun Lock. The length of the cable is perfect for this application. By doing this on both sides of the GunMate Range Bag, none of the zippers can be unzipped to gain access to any compartment of my GunMate Range Bag without unlocking the Cable Gun Locks. This safety/security locking feature also permits me to keep my range bag fully packed inside my home. When I first ordered my GunMate Range Bag, I didn't know how strong the fabric, the zippers, and the seams would be, and if the hook-and-loop (Velcro) dividers would be strong enough to keep everything in its place. After several months use with the bag filled with all the ammo and shooting gear listed above, I am happy to report that the bag looks as good as new, Whoever thought of using the double zippers connected with a fabric strap on the large center compartment should be given a big bonus, and the Velcro sewn onto the end of the center compartment flap works great by strengthening the closure of the large center compartment and giving the bag a clean, tailored appearance. The nylon ballistic fabric looks great, the zippers all glide smoothly, the Velcro is still holding very tightly, the lightly cushioned nylon handles are still holding strongly, and none of the seams have split open or come undone. With the weight of my GunMate Range Bag when filled, I'm glad it has a comfortable, adjustable shoulder strap to make carrying it so much easier. For it's relatively small size, compared to some of the other range bags costing two to three times as much, my GunMate Range Bag is a real workhorse. Several of the guys at the shooting range can't believe how much gear comes out of my bag. One guy asked me where my second bag was, because there was no way all the gear I had out on my shooting station could have come out of that one little bag. Unless you need to carry more shooting gear to the shooting range than I have listed in this review, if you are looking for a quality range bag at a very competitive price, order this GunMate Range Bag. I think you will like it as much as I do.

OK as a low cost option, but better out there IMHO

Start with the positives: • There is a flip down stiff insert that gives the main compartment a nice solid floor base. • The shoulder strap is fairly unremarkable but I do give them credit for making the attach rings and the clips out of metal when so many of the discount bags are going cheap plastic. • The carry handles are looped all around the bag (go underneath and continue up other side) which seems like it will give them extra strength compared to a model that might just stitch them on anchors on each side individually. • The two included handgun sleeves are a nice touch to keep the guns from rubbing up against other items if you don't already have any (our guns came with some so not really needed for my situation). • The zippers seem decent and feel large and solid, with oversized lock rings that are bigger than the typical ones that can barely fit a TSA style lock (Note, no locks included, but this bag will accommodate one for each side of the bag with a gun sleeve). • The main compartment has a U format zipper that runs down each side with a pull cord that attaches them so you can unzip quickly and open the entire top for easy wide access to contents And now for the negatives: • I found the inner cross dividers very flimsy so didn't add any structural support and didn't confidently divide contents. • Inner cross dividers, while they are velcro and can be removed if desired, are set to predefined positions as opposed to having a velcro strip down each side so you can position them flexibly to meet your needs. For my gear that would have been nice. • There are no rubber or plastic foot pads on the bottom of the bag, it's just the raw bag. This will ultimately cause extra wear on the material, and your bag is going to get dirty/muddy/wet (etc) on the ground. • The handgun sleeves don't have zippers on them, nor any kind of velcro or elastic straps inside. Nothing for retention. I was hesitant to toss in guns and mags since they'd potentially just slide around into each other in the sleeve. • The handgun sleeves are tight in the side pockets and seem just a hair wider than the zipper opening so are tight to fit in and out. Honestly, once they are inside there's not really room for anything else unless it were super flat so I'm not really sure why they need to come out anyway. To me this then relegated each side pocket to a single handgun, no mags, no extras. Ultimately inefficient. • There's no specified areas for "loose" gear. Examples, no loops for things like multi tools or even mags. You'd have to buy separate little bags/pouches/etc for them or they're just free sliding around in your bag. • There's no molle attachments. To be fair, it doesn't advertise or claim them so not a ding per se, but given the lack of extra pockets or gear loops I found myself desperately wanting to attach some extra pockets. CONCLUSION: For me, this was a quick pass. It's ok, and inexpensive, but for me the cons strongly outweighed the pros. Ultimately the lack of extra pockets, loops, etc for smaller gear and mags was a complete killer for me. It made it just feel like a (smaller) simple gym bag where you just toss everything in. Might work for smelly clothes and shoes at the gym, doesn't work well for my range gear and my ability to keep it protected and organized.
