Great shoe - exactly what I'd hoped they would be
By Mandrel Bent on Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2020
I wore a similar Doc Marten shoe years ago, and decided to get a new pair. When researching, I really liked the classic 8053 design (might even be the same design I wore before). Then, I noticed this SNOW version... water resistant, special sole designed for traction in snow and ice, and an added interior lining, and so I thought, these seem like good improvements for only a few bucks more in price. But I couldn't find many reviews...so I am sharing my feedback!First - right to the point - these seem to be really nicely made shoes. I've now owned these shoes for a week - it has been snowing, wet, and cold outside. I've worn them every day, so I feel I have a good baseline experience.1) Fit - I ordered my standard size - and these fit perfectly. Not too big, not too small. No real need for break-in either, and I'm sure they will only wear better the longer I own them. Very happy.2) Comfort - Very comfortable! I really enjoy the shoe, and feel it has a comfortable padding and just a little bit of arch support. No, it's not an athletic shoe, but you shouldn’t expect them to be like that kind of shoe, but for this type of shoe, I am very happy. Note that these shoes, by design, are a little heavier than your normal shoe. I don't find this to be an issue, nor really noticeable when I wear them, but I felt you should know. (All Doc Marten shoes are this way). Frankly, the weight is a key part of the design, helping keep you grounded, so I wouldn't change a thing.3) Looks - This is subjective, but I'll share my 2 cents. See the picture - that's what you get. In my opinion, these shoes have a good look when worn with jeans or pants in the winter. Dressier than athletic shoes, for sure, but still casual and comfortable. I need to note that the brown leather is exactly as shown in the pictures. That is, because this is the SNOW version, they use a water-resistant version of their leather upper, it's a solid, dark brown color. While the 'normal' version of the 8053 Doc Marten Shoe comes in a lighter brown leather with what I would almost call a 'patina' to it, this brown is not the same. It's darker, and again, solid. I just wanted to share this because I wasn't sure if the pictures were accurate. They are. That said, it's a nice look. I'd prefer the 'traditional' brown leather look, but I understand that this color is part of the decision to get the weatherproofing.SNOW version differences - Okay, so this is what you need to know - again, per the shoe description, there are three different 'upgrades', to the SNOW version of this shoe. I will review each in detail:1) Water resistant upper leather - So again, the leather is a darker, solid color. This works great because, if you ever see brown leather shoes when they are wet, they turn a darker shade of brown. These shoes don't do that, because, hey, they are already darker! As far as actual water protection goes, while I have not waded through a creek or anything, I have been in rain and show and my feet have stayed dry and warm! Also, after getting wet, once they dry again, there is literally zero change in the color or look of the leather so far. So I think the water resistant feature seems to be working as designed. Happy with this!Shoe traction - It's clear when looking at the bottom of this shoe what Doc Marten did - the tread pattern is different, and the bottom sides of the tread use a slightly different rubber with some 'sipes' on them that is designed to help in cold and snowy conditions. (It's actually very similar to automotive tire design, if you want to research that). Anyway, bottom line, it works! I have experienced zero traction issues walking in snow and ice... zero. How much better are they better than Docs without this feature, I can't say, but I CAN say that they seem to do the job as designed.Interior Lining - I was worried about this, because I didn't know how thick the lining would be. Would it be too warm, fuzzy, etc. Never fear, the interior lining is actually quite thin, just enough to add a layer of winter protection, and help keep your feet warm, but not so much that it changes the wearing experience. You wouldn't know it had a lining when wearing them, except perhaps, they are a little bit softer and a little bit warmer than normal Docs. And in my opinion, that's perfect! Conclusion: So, if you want to go mountain climbing, this isn't that shoe. What this shoe is, however, is a slightly upgraded version of the traditional Doc Martens 8053 shoe design, with changes made for those who will be wearing them in cold winter weather. For me, these will be winter shoes, worn from October to April every year. Where I live, we have snow and ice most of the winter, therefore it's a clear decision for me to choose the SNOW version of this shoe. Now if you don't live in a snowy climate, this is not the shoe for you, but then again, you probably are not shopping the SNOW version of this shoe anyway. Overall highly recommended!Following up - Shoe has worn very well over the past few years. However, I noticed this review may now be under the traditional version of the shoe vs. the winter version, fyi.

When they arrived, I tried them on and very quickly noticed that they seemed too loose on my feet. But I initially chalked that up to wearing thinner socks, so I wore them to work the next day wearing different socks. Still too long, and they rubbed my heel so bad because of not fitting right that I ended up with a pretty nasty blister after one day of work and my feet hurt so bad. Size 9 was clearly not right for me.So I returned them, and bought size 8s, because of course they don't make half sizes. The 8s were too small around the heel and hurt my feet a different way. My entire foot felt like it was on fire wearing them to work, and nothing I did made them any more comfortable. I'm extremely disappointed with my experience and have learned to never buy this brand of shoes ever again.Returned the second pair and went shopping elsewhere for work shoes. This was a waste of my time. Save yourself the headaches and look elsewhere from the start. The company should be embarrassed of what they have become.

and though I think it makes better sense to take them off as I'm writing this

I purchased my pair two years ago, in 2014. Since then, they've carried me through daily use on everything from ER floors, to the streets of Germany. It's probably worth mentioning that I'm wearing them now -- I've been out for the day, and though I think it makes better sense to take them off as I'm writing this, now that I'm thinking about it, I think it speaks to the level of absolute perfection in comfortable daily use.I've abused these shoes to extremes, over the past two years. I've used them as emergency active-wear, for work, and for when I want something that looks good on my feet when I go out. I put a new layer of polish on them a couple of days ago, and they look like the day they arrived in their box. The shoestrings are looking a bit worn, but it's hard to complain about that with two years of use, and an inexpensive replacement when I need to. It's just unreal.Believe me when I say that these are the best shoes that I've ever owned. I'm the sort of person who tends to have a fairly abusive gait on shoes, and while the insole has shaped to a perfect imprint of my foot over time, it's still in near-perfect condition. I'm even the sort of person who tends to force their foot into the shoe without untying the laces, and I'm only just now starting to see a little bit of wear on the inside of the heel. I think an insert would be best for people who have arch support problems, but the crafting of the shoe is acceptable for normal circumstances.I think it's about time for me to buy a new pair, but it's a hard thing to do, considering the treads have mostly survived the last two years, aside from the ball of the foot, and even then, they only lost their profile fairly recently.I can't speak to build quality these days, since I've never had to replace them, but these are an incredible pair of shoes, that stand up to impossible wear and tear, and look good in the process. I'll be buying these again, when the day comes that I need to replace them, which isn't soon.

I bought my first pair of Doc Marten's last October - a brown version of this same shoe. I loved them so much within two weeks I ordered this black pair. The praise here is for both. Further down I'll address customer support. As billed, this is a sturdy, warm shoe fit for most occasions and wardrobes. I'm the principal of a public school and while I don't wear a suit to work, I usually wear slacks of some kind, dress shirt, and jacket or sweater. These shoes work with everything I wear, including jeans on Fridays and elsewhere. They're also warm and sturdy for rainy cool fall through spring here in the northwest. They are wonderfully comfortable and I can be on my feet for hours in them with no trouble. Now for the support part: Kudos to both Doc Martens AND Amazon on this. About 2 weeks after I got my black pair, I started noticing a snapping sound in the left shoe when I walked. At first it was intermittent, but soon got persistent with each step. It was audible enough that people heard me clicking down the hallway. There was no visible problem on the outer or inner sole, nor could I reproduce it just manipulating the shoe - only when I walked in it. This was right before the holidays so I didn't get around to doing anything about it until the second week of January. I first left a message with Doc Marten's call line (it was the weekend). Then I looked up my Amazon order and saw the return options. One was a straight exchange for the same item. I clicked a few boxes and got a qr code and directions to drop the shoes off at UPS - no packing required. I walked into my local UPS store with the shoes thinking I'd have to explain, but the clerk smiled and said, "Sending back these? Show me the QR code." I did and walked out the door 30 seconds later with the receipt. That part was amazing in itself but here's the kicker. The next morning the replacement shoes arrived. THE NEXT MORNING! It was less than a 24 hour turnaround time. I was expecting weeks. My hat's off to Amazon on this return process. Also, hat's off to Doc Marten's - I got a prompt call back from them on Monday, apologizing for the problem and offering to fully exchange the product. I explained about the Amazon solution and they let me know that if there were problems with that, to call them back and they'd fix it. The problem by the way, was something she said comes up once in a while when an airpocket inside the sole ruptures.Great shoes, great service from both Amazon and Doc Marten's.

For several decades I wore the darker-skinned brother to these shoes. Then one day, much to my surprise, the hot chick in the office asked me why I was wearing a brown belt with black shoes. Unfortunately that was at 4:45 in the afternoon so I could only google “brown belt, black shoes” for 15 minutes before it was time to leave work for my beard-trimming appointment. I spent the next four days at work combing through Google (and the beard-lice I developed from the “discount” beard-trimming). I was shocked to learn that you are “supposed” to match the color of your belt with your shoes.Well I felt a bit rebellious, and I really like my belt, so I decided instead to match the color of my shoes with my belt. That’s when I ordered these. When they arrived my first thought was to burn them… I suspected witchcraft or dark sorcery. How was it possible that these could be identical to my black Dr. Martens, except brown?! But eventually I worked up the courage to try them on, and I have been in heaven ever since. These things are fantastic brown clones of the black ones. They are comfortable. They are acid resistant (trust me I tested it).And they make you about an inch taller (doesn’t work in countries with the metric system). My only caveat, is they do need to be manually tied – you know, the old fashion way – so make sure you know someone with these skills. Unfortunately Dr. Marten doesn’t make a clip-on derivative.Ohh, and I ended-up marrying that “hot chick in the office”. I owe it all to these great shoes. And google.

My husband purchased these Doc Martens Oxfords back in 2000 and they literally lasted 15 years with regularly wear. He then ordered the same pair back in 2018 and they lasted almost 2 years with regular wear. Two years is still really good for a pair of shoes, but they clearly don't make them like they used to. That being said, the big difference, the soles don't last. The grooves in the bottom ware down and then the shoes become very slick in the snow, as well as the soles dis-attach from the shoe. Other than that, the shoes are great. They are stylish, look as photographed, and are true to size. One thing I want to note...be careful when ordering from here. We ordered a size 13 and when it was added to the cart it said size 12, which is then what was shipped to us. I spoke to five different Amazon customer service reps including someone in leadership and they were all extremely unhelpful. In the end, we ordered the 14 and when in the cart it said size 13. Something is definitely wrong with the listing but trying to get help from Amazon customer service was like pulling teeth from a tiger.

These Doc Marten's are a great value due to made-in-China pricing with adequate British QC. The color is a lovely "mottled" brown that adds to the handmade look, although they may have been cranked out in some shoe factory in unknown lands. One of the shoes arrived with a color-scratched-scuffed mark near the toebox, revealing pale leather, which is an example of rough handling someplace before the item got boxed up. This defect was easily corrected with a simple wipe of some Meltonian #12 Red Mahogany boot polish. (This stuff also fixes up scuffs on your Ecco reddish-brown boots and any darker brown-red shoes, just fine.) I expect to thoroughly scuff up my D.Marten's over their useful life. The insoles are a leather-like material over some back half of the insert, with a woven tough looking smooth fiber in the forefoot zone. The tongues are double-thick leather but not padded. The edges of the shoe opening on this model are padded with foam covered bysomething that resembles vinyl, so it may not be real leather. Sizing info is stamped into the inside of the shoe, but see-through plastic stickers with icky glue are stuck on some inside surfaces to tell you it's "MENS" and country of origin for some components. Be prepared to swipe some Goo-Gone over those spots when the stickers slide around in the near future. Underneath the inner cover there is a full length plastic inner sole "frame" (can you call it a frame if it's flat?) that gives the shoe its rigidity. This piece is ensconsed within the brown, jelly-like synthetic rubber outer bottom sole which "resists oil, fat, petrol, alkali" and maybe even McDonald's dipping sauces. This is a good looking shoe. But keep in mind it may be a high-maintenance shoe over time. It is not waterproof, so you have to occasionally rub it down thickly with some waterproofer every damp season. (Do this AFTER you apply your shoe wax that maintains the color and hides the scuffs.) Use mink oil or other waxy-like substance. The price of Doc's chemicals seem outrageous if you use it often, it's like buying ink cartridges for your cheap printer.... Just kidding; you only need a glob for each shoe, each winter or rainy seasonFitment: popular comments say to buy slightly large if you must choose to round off. This is good advice My "normal" size is 9.5, so with the 10 M US, I fit perfectly into the 8053 shoe and have room for thick, comfy socks. Would fit even with thin socks, but I'd just tie 'em a bit snugger. If your normal size is 10 M US, and your feet do not "swell up" after a long day, you will fit the 10 M US just fine. The walking action on these shoes is noticeably quieter when compared to my Ecco shoes with bumpy trail treads. The tread on this shoe is a series of shallow (about 1 mm or 1/16") tall strips angled about 20 degrees side-to-side. I expect these design affectations to wear down to flatness relatively quickly. But the relatively thick soles should last quite a long time before losing useful life or shape.
