Absolutely love this lamp!
By KatyKatMidwest on Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2011
I've been wanting one of these lamps for a long time. I promised myself as soon as the price got within my range, it would be mine. So many people had good things to say about the WBM brand as well, I kept looking at those lamp options. I am SO glad that I bought it. It arrived today. The box had a tear in the lid. The lamp had a chunk broken off of it as well. (A fairly substantial piece, yet I did not feel it mattered enough to return the lamp. See photos.) The lamp is MUCH heavier than I had expected, so that was a surprise. You would definitely not want to place this where it could be knocked off or tipped over easily, or over a glass shelf. In our case, we have curious cats, so its final place will need to be where the cats cannot rub on it and tip it over or knock it off onto something else. The base is very sturdy and looks nice. Mine is a medium brown tone and would fit in about any décor. I love the natural look of the lamp. (I have photos of the lamp both on and off - please check the additional photos in the item description.) I really look forward to seeing how it looks at night in a dark room. Some of the things in the tiny print in the usage manual include not using it outside, and to always use a placemat or coaster due to the salt "sweating" and possibly damaging furniture. Right now, mine is on a surface that won't matter, but it is worth mentioning, in case you might have plans to place it on a good end table or bookcase. In my case, this is going to be in my bedroom, and I already have an orange bedspread, so it fits right in. However, I would love this no matter what colors I had in my room. The height and size varies naturally, so no two lamps will be alike. Mine is approximately 8.25" tall (including the base), and fits well into the bedroom. It seems to be about 4.5" wide. I love all the natural crags and crevaces of the lamp. The backside of mine is flat, but that's okay too. I am using the original night light (which is replaceable either to change colors or replace a burned out light), and the lamp gives off a very pleasant orange/peach glow. I like just looking at it too, and will probably stare at it a little more in the dark! Ha! As far as freshening the air with the negative ions - it is too soon to tell, so I'll update my review once I feel we've had time to feel a difference. Our bedroom is not huge (maybe 10x11), so 2-3 weeks should be enough time to feel any breathing differences. Both my daughter and I have asthma and allergies. The cats are in and out of here all day long as well, so anything it can do to help is going to be great. I've read both good and bad about the negative ion thing and asthma, so I have placed it away from where my head will actually be in bed. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase, and will probably be buying more as the money allows. The look alone is enough to please me, and I do hope the salt lives up to the claims on the air freshening. UPDATE AUG 2011: We now have THREE of these lamps. Yes, they seem to do that much good for the air quality. We have a very small place, and despite changing the filters monthly, is the most dusty place in which I've ever lived. Since using these lamps, I no longer experience that burning in my sinuses that I had before. Each lamp received has been very different, with the last one being the lightest in color. However, as long as they are all a chunk of the salt, and they do their job, I can live with that. I want to get a smaller one for our bathroom as well. NOTE: When replacing the bulbs, they use a bulb just like a Christmas tree light. HOWEVER - most holiday lights are only 4 watts. You will NOT get the air purifying effect with that - it will be a decorative light only. The salt has to get warm to help filter the air, and that only happens with a 15-watt bulb. They are available in 2-packs at WalMart, and I am sure many other places. Just check on your wattage if your lamp does not seem to be doing much.

Fragile quality.

The crystal is VERY heavy and beautiful, there is no doubts about that. Be extra careful when handling it since it is just the same salt you buy from a local store or see in your local Asian spa and it may melt when the moisture from your hands contacts the crystal's surface. It can be slippery because of its unstable mineral nature.Do not spill water on it, do not grab it with soiled hands either. Do not put it next to your fireplace either.Do not put it in your bathroom or anywhere where moisture builds up fast and heavily. Do not rub your eyes with your hands after handling the lamp - they WILL GET SALTY and you will get salt in your eyes. The cord isn't very long, just a little over 5 feet. There is a switch attached to the cord, so that you turn your lamp using that, instead of plugging it in every time. The shipping was prompt and the box came intact, undamaged, however, the lamp inside the box was another story. The crystal didn't suffer any damage while being delivered, but the light bulb inside did break into small particles, so small that I couldn't determine the kind of light bulb that goes inside the lamp. When I asked Amazon about the kind of bulb, they only told me that I would have to contact the lamp's manufacturer myself to find out! I don't have much time or desire to do that myself and I firmly believe that it is not my duties to bother about such issues in a first place. Now, the glass is out, but the metal part of the bulb is still inside the base, it is apparently stuck there. I guess my best option is to go to the local Home Depot store to seek assistance and request info about the lamp in general and the bulbs that could be used inside the lamps like this. Amazon firmly was not able to provide me with that info or with the replacement of the bulb/base. I was told that this lamp is treated as a SET and its particles cannot be replaced separately. I do not share this view since the crystal is clearly detachable, the bulbs are clearly replaceable and the base could be replaceable as well, which would mean less trouble for the seller. I insisted that the seller replace the light bulb or the base for me instead of the full refund or replacement, but Amazon cannot do that. Finally, I asked Amazon to refund me the price of the bulb since I still have to search for the bulb anyway, then to determine if the base still works. They offered 50% refund, and I accepted that. What else? The lamp is made in Pakistan, and perhaps it is safe to assume that such fragile product is maybe not worth buying from overseas. When you see such a lamp sold in your local store, you can test it right on the spot and take it home and be happy, however, when you order it like I did, there is always a chance of disappointment. I gave this item only 3 stars because I do not like to receive broken items - I believe that items should be inspected before shipping to avoid loosing money and customers displeasure. I was very excited about receiving this lamp, but all my good emotions are ruined now cause I cannot turn on the lamp since it is broken. Imagine if it were a gift.... I strongly advise you to inspect the item upon arrival and make sure it works before presenting it as a gift. Another reason for 3 stars is Amazon's conduct. Thanks for the offer of half refund, indeed, but providing me with the info WHERE to buy a new damn light bulb would preserve some good emotions for me. Now here I have a broken lamp, no info on which bulb goes inside, and no info on where to buy a new replacement. Sure, I am feeling very damn romantic about the lamp :-( And on a final note, if you ever feel like needing salt.....well, you can always lick your lamp, so you can surely say that your lamp is totally edible...Eventually its surface will suffer environmental damage and will collect dust - I have seen that on my small crystals already. When that happens, you take it apart, break it, wash the surface layer off, then crush the crystal and use it as a regular table salt because that is what it is - pink Himalayan salt. So, you guys consider my experience and shop wisely!
