Too Long for Transmission Switch
By Mark Twain on Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2016
2003 Toyota Tacoma - 2.7L - 4x4 - 5sp Manual Actually too shallow for the back-up (reverse) light switch on a manual transmission. And the deep socket was too long (hit the floor board). Ended up going to lowes and using a 1 & 1/16" (26.9875mm) socket. It was only $6 including tax too. Lowes was sold out of all metric sockets unbelievably - aside from 12 point ones. And we all know 12 point sockets are garbage. 12 points is ok maybe on a wrench. Not on a socket. And not for torqued bolts. Spec's from calipers. Note, while I'm an engineer. I'm in a different field and calipers are not my expertise so these measurements may be off slightly. Tekton shallow socket (27mm) 38.2mm / 1.5" long 18.5mm / 0.728" hex cut-out depth 27.25mm / 1.073" hex width (socket size) 37.93mm / 1.493" hex outside width Tekton Deep Socket 78.07mm / 3.04" long 42.94mm / 1.42" hex cut-out depth 27.27mm / 1.073" hex width (socket size) 37.92mm / 1.493" hex outside width Kobalt 1 & 1/16" shallow impact 42.15mm / 1.659" long 22.28mm / 0.877" hex cut-out depth 27.25mm / 1.073" hex width (socket size) 37.9mm / 1.492" hex outside width 3 stars because fair price and it's a quality deep socket. Just happens to be too long for my job. I would personally like to see an extra 0.4" (1.8" total) cut out in the hex pattern, but that might be hard given the stress to be put on the socket. I always get impact instead of regular nowadays. I do this for the round notches in the corner which seem to limit damage to the hex nuts being torqued. Also big fan of 6point opposed to 12point. A story: I messed up a mazda miata's lug nuts several years ago with a cheap impact and standard sockets. Sheered through and dented them like tinfoil. Got the tire off easily but really messed up the small lugs. Learned from then on, to always use impact sockets with the corners cut out.
