Best Mess Kit for the Money, Hands Down
By DSA on Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2015
This mess kit is pretty amazing for $20. I've owned a lot of mess kits over time (Swedish mess kits, USGI kits, East German kits, and various Coleman kits) and most have been cast aluminum, which gets the job done but has the tendency to stain badly and after extended use, gets harder and harder to clean. This kit though is made of stainless steel with a light copper plating on the bottom of each piece of kit. I don't know what gauge stainless steel it is made from but it feels VERY sturdy and is also EXTREMELY lightweight, The Copper plating on the bottom of the pans has been done excellently. For $20 you almost expect it to be cheaply done. This kit however looks like the pieces were assembled with a great attention to detail. The spot welds that old the handles on the pan are very well done as well.It looks as if they were pressed then welded then brushed up. The screws on the pan lid are tight and sturdy, and the handles on the pot are slotted so it doesn't spill when you pick it up but when your done the handle easily folds down and away. Very well made and thought out design. Again, this is a $20 kit I would have gladly paid more for in a store based solely on its build quality. On a camp stove all the items heat up evenly. The copper allows for more even heat distribution which allows for faster cooking and more evenly cooked foods. Cleanup is also SUPER easy as the pans simply wipe clean. Also, depending on the gas flame or open flame, you can get a bit of soot buildup. This is normal. This post cleans easier in that aspect too. After 3-4 uses it's still holding up fine. The plating is as well. I think this kit is DEFINITELY worth the money. Plus it comes with a small carry bag which I totally didn't expect but is very useful and a nice touch. I might buy a few more of these just to have/give as gifts to my camping pals.

Concerns
By A. Nony Mous on Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2022
I received the mess kit today. It is light weight and compact. The diameter is hardly wider than the spread of my hand. And as a 5'1" person, I have small hands. So this set is really just to cook for 1 or 2 people at most. I took it out of the packaging to wash it. One thing I noticed that I did Not like was a "made in China" sticker on the bottom of the fry pan. It wouldn't have bothered me so much if it were the bottom of the plate. I'm concerned it could catch fire on the fry pan and scorch the food cooking. I tried peeling it off. And I scrubbed. And scrubbed. And scrubbed. And most of the glue still remains. I guess the next step is to boil water in the pan using my camp stove to see if that will burn off the glue. Speaking of cleaning. Neither of the handles on the pot or the pan support cleaning. They flop around and are more of a nuisance when trying to scrub. As far as I can see, neither are detachable. As to how they handle cooking, UPDATE: The sticker glue did not burn off when I boiled water in the pan. As a matter of fact, it doesn't seem to be effected at all. Maybe due to the type of camp stove I have. A single burner that you turn on with a knob instead of a match. The sticker is dead center, but the flame ring is not. As to the pot, it's actually a little small for my camp stove. The first time I used it, it kept slipping off the trivet and into the flames. Burnt my breakfast. I threw some water in the pot and boiled it right after scraping my breakfast out. It cleaned up fairly easy, but it took the shiny off the steel. I had set up in the dark and, when it got lighter, saw that the trivet wasn't sitting properly on the stove. However, the next time I used it, and the trivet was placed properly, the pot still slipped into the fire ring if not placed just right. But once it's placed just so, it will stay. As to how well it cooks? I'm not the one to ask. I ate my burnt breakfast and was happy with it.
