Irwin drill bits are GREAT!

Irwin drill bits are GREAT! Use these for drilling lots and lots of holes in wooden studs for running non-metallic electrical cable (commonly called Romex) in homes. Bits come sharp, and stay sharp for a good long time. (Unless, you hit a nail or screw buried in the wooden studs.) Fortunately, this isn't a killer because these bits can be resharpened on the job. A small flat file and about a minute or so and it's ready to drill again. Obviously, there is a limit on how many times you can resharpen them. But I get several wiring jobs out of a bit. When sharp, and mounted in a strong drill motor, these bits drill clean holes quickly. They will drill through 3 pieces of 2-by lumber at a time. However, when boring deeper holes, it's best to pull the bit back out a few inches to help clear the drilling chips. These also come in a longer length which allows even deeper boring. Buy these! You won't be disappointed.

Gets gummed up and quits working

The little cutting slot that begins the helix gets gummed up with wood Might be fine for blowing holes through kiln dried lumber, but with wet pressure treated boards it gets about 2" deep before stopping Then you need to use a utility knife to clean all that out. If the bit is really hot, the PTL stuff is like glued in there. Tough to get out. I only bought it because my paddle bits are only 6" long and I'm going through 7" of wood. Ultimately, I did most of the hole with a plain dumb drill bit, then finished the last inch with this cutter, cleaning it out after every hole. Now that this project is done, I'm pitching it. At least it didn't cost a lot.
