Long-haired breeds: Hair should be parted with free hand and brushed away from the skin in small areas to avoid "deep matting." Wire and coarse-hair breeds: Brush away from the skin with short, deliberate strokes, working in small areas. Short & smooth-hair breeds: Long, firm repeated strokes of the brush with help to increase coat gloss and remove dead hair.
