You'll XD Yourself

Way to co-opt a popular emoticon, Roku. XD

Be honest, did you at some point in your internet career Google "XD" to figure out what it stood for? Xanadu Disfigurement? Xerox Depot? Well, SPOILER ALERT but it's actually an emoticon, as you were probably already ashamed to have realized. (Do you see it? It's a squinting, laughing person. See it?)

We therefore give a sincere tip of our cap to the folks at Roku for releasing this 3050B XD streaming media player. Not only does it provide an affordable, simple way to stream all kinds of content right to your TV, it also co-opts a popular emoticon right there in its name.

Who doesn't want to feel like this?: XD

We're worried that this might start an arms race as other electronic companies lay claim to other popular internet emoticons. How long before we begin selling the Samsung :D or the Sanyo ¯\_(ツ)_/¯? Why stop at emoticons? Why not venture into product names that are themselves elaborate works of ASCII art?

What are Top Comments?

Top Comments are discussion forum posts we have deemed worthy of your time. Listen, we get a lot of comments, and most of the time, it's pretty forgettable stuff; but sometimes you rise to the top like butterfat in milk. We don't recommend you base your self-worth on how often we feature your comments, but we don't expressly forbid it either.
