I do think that a point has been lost and Woot! has been a little sneaky in this poll. Thus far, we are assuming that they are asking about "Grilled Cheese Sandwiches" - the poll just says "Grilled Cheese".

The bread is important -- take two slices and toast 'em.

Then, butter both sides of each slice of the would-be sandwich.

Then, on the insides, each gets a slice of American "Pasteurized process cheese food" and one gets additional ingredients -- I tend to favor Parmesan, there could also be Romano, herbs, garlic, etc.

Slap the loaded one on the grill, and when it gets melty, flip it over onto the other one and slap that on the grill.

You want the "Maillard reaction" to be going on outside the sandwich, while inside you have the "melty cheesy thing glued to the bread with butter" when you're done.

plus ham before grilling, plus tomato and pickle after grilling = ultimate grilled cheese-type sandwich.

Oh Yeah ! Sourdough Baggette, sliced at an angle (need 2-3 for Lunch since they're kinda small) thin enough to get the heat to melt very sharp cheddar without burning bread. Dip in Tomato soup.

Artisan cheese on artisan bread. With the appropriate wine on the side. (Or a micro-brew beer, if you prefer.)

Weirdo's. White bread, buttered on the outside, with a slice of Kraft or Borden's cheese. Grilled and eaten. Period!

It sounds weird, but MAYONNAISE. It adds just enough zip to the equation. Not too much though, or it gets kinda messy.

Thinly sliced dill pickles, right in there with the cheese. Trust me on this.

Some one is missing something. The slices of gherkins or dills between the two slices of cheese immediately spring to mind.

Best grilled cheese I've ever had was on rustic italian bread, havarti and a nice thin slice of tomato in the middle. Of course, liberally buttered so it grills up golden and crispy in the pan. Yummmmm.

I always thought the key ingredients to an amazing grilled cheese was just cheese, bread, and lots of butter. Then I met my boyfriend who added in tomato and avocado. Best. Sandwich. Ever. He is the grilled cheese maker in this relationship :D

Add tomato -- SO good!

Either on sourdough with a slice of tomato, or go for full on Montecristo sandwiches... Ham and a delicious artisan cheese, dipped in egg, and fried up. Delicious. If I'm feeling a bit bored, I'll add a spicy mustard (the kind with horseradish). Love it.

Gouda, gouda, gouda, gouda rockin' everywh-eyurr.

Any sandwich with cheese I am good with, but if I have to slave to make it, it cold ham and cheese all the way.

Everything is better with Bacon....a pickle slice is tasty too.

Grilled Cheese? Grilled Awesome.

Lightly buttered pieces of Rosemary and Garlic sourdough bread with just enough sharp cheddar cheese to completely cover the layer of ham/turkey/beef sandwich meat on both sides between the bread.

Sprinkled with smoked paprika and a bit of garlic powder.

Cooked at low heat with the lid on for about 8 minutes or until golden brown on both sides and melty.

What you're forgetting to ask about is the tomato soup.
