anyone recommend?
specifically for binaries...
Same company/service behind the other block account deal featured a few weeks back here. Don't believe there has been any problems.
@wootiewooterson: Did Woot reach some agreement with the creator of the image you're using to illustrate Usenet where you don't have to give attribution?
@chris12345: i am double checking on this...
here is the skinny:
Author / Illustrator Benjamin D. Esham (bdesham). If attribution is required, attribute this image to Benjamin D. Esham for the Wikimedia Commons.
Permission
As a courtesy (but not a requirement), please e-mail me or leave a note on my talk page if you use this image outside of Wikipedia. Thanks!
the merchant for this sponsored deal has noted their intentions to use the referencing image.
thanks for asking... :)
The wikipedia page where it was used states simply: "As a courtesy (but not a requirement), please e-mail me or leave a note on my talk page if you use this image outside of Wikipedia. Thanks!"
So as far as i can tell it isnt required, but a comment was left at some point for use.
@explorer33: The image copyrighted but freely licensed for use as long as the license conditions are met. The conditions are attribution and "share alike", which means that any derivative works need to be similarly freely licensed. If Woot has some other agreement with the author, however, it may not be necessary.
@wootiewooterson: Excellent. Thank you.
whats with all the damn legal talk, can i just get some feedback about this provider....?
Bought a block last time and tried out the service. worked well. had access to all the goodies, just like any brand name newsgroup server. I would recommend.
How is this any different than astraweb's deal?
@nullx42: It's not, far as I can tell. Now that Astraweb has seemingly fixed their downtime problems they had a few years ago, they've been pretty awesome seeing how I'm only paying $7 a month.
What is this exactly??????
@chris12345: i try to be thorough.... :)
thanks...
@nullx42: The difference is 81 cents per month. ;) Honestly though, our price per month for this is lower than all of our competitors when you look at what you get for the price. Access to 2 servers, SSL, 500+ days of retention, posting and a neat little web based newsreader that will let you access discussions right on your iPhone (although it does also work fairly well on Blackberries and some other devices).
Notice we do say 500 days retention, we tend to be more ahem conservative with how we advertise that, versus just about all of our competitors.
Yes, there has been multi-month deals that bring the per month price lower when you divide it out (we even have them now and then) but we have found that once users start paying for more than 3 months at a time, the re-billings become an issue because folks forget all about it, or many just dont feel prepaying for a year or more up front is worth it. That's a personal decision though. A year is a long time in the Usenet world!

Rule 1: Nobody ever talks about USENET.
Rule 2: NOBODY EVER talks about USENET.

@ramthor: OMG! i <3 you so much right now..... :)

Usenet is a throwback to the old days of the internet before GUIs. It is like a bulletin board system that lets you post messages and read responses on different topics, similar to internet forums.
Messaging is only a small piece of what goes on on usenet. The part everyone is really interested in is the binary filez that are posted. You will find music, movies, software, books, and of course, porn, all pirated and posted there for easy DLing.
Your ISP probably provides access to usenet, but may have only a limited selection of newsgroups, and may have poor binary support (incomplete filez) and poor retention (they dump messages, especially binaries) off their servers after a few days or weeks, and may have slow servers.
This deal is for a premium usenet service provider. They have fast servers (at least one would hope), what appears to be great retention, and allow unlimited DL/UL traffic for about $10 per month.

Simplified: Shareware and Pin-up models.
Yeah, I bought that block deal that was on here a couple of weeks ago. I'm very satisfied. I'm not too sure if this a good deal or not but this provider is great - I've had no problems so far.
the deal offered a few weeks ago was a specific number of usenet hours without expiration, which was a great deal for the occasional user....you would have to be a power user for this to be a great deal, although it is a good deal by usenet provider standards....usenet users tend to be hardcore continuous patrons. they sign up for a year at a time, not month to month.
Can't I find the same thing on Google Groups?
@stevec5000: Google Groups only indexes text based newsgroups. If that is what you are after they are a good, free option.
Aren't they all texted based? What other kind is there?
@stevec5000: Good catch Steve, Let me rephrase that, Google only indexes and gives free access to non-binary, discussion based groups.
